The Highest Good

I have always believed that everything happens for the highest good.  Recent events have made me start questioning the veracity of that belief. I am beginning to believe that there are some events, some actions, that occur outside of (or inspite of) the influences of what I call the universal energy field.  These events may be planned, or may be entirely accidental or coincidental.  Yes, I am beginning to believe in coincidences, too. A tire on a semi separates throwing tire chunks all over.  A car next to the semi is hit by the debris, the driver loses control, and someone dies.  A drunk fires a gun into the air on New Year's Eve and the bullet falls onto the head of a young girl a half mile away.  Someone is standing on the edge of a cliff and the dirt gives way under their feet.  Was there intelligence behind those events?  I used to try to tell myself there was and that they happened for the highest good of all.  Now I'm not so sure.  Maybe some stuff really does just happen.  No rhyme or reason for it, no explanation or rationalization.  It just does and what is important is not that the event occurred, but how we respond/react to it. In truth, now that this concept has been revealed to me, I'm beginning to see that it meshes with my overall beliefs better than the "highest good for all" idea. OK, something to ponder on for a while.
