The Empty Swing

Timeless summer days. Sharry by my side, as we gently rocked on the bench swing, while Matt bounced on his trampoline, and serenaded us with his cd player. Talking and laughing, just happy in each other's company. through all those years, I can honestly say, that I appreciated every bit of time with her, but foolishly assumed we would have so many more. From that swing, we watched the seasons change. We saw Matt grow from a child into a young man. I watched her and Matt sitting in it from a distance as I mowed, and quietly thanked God for the privilege of being a husband and father. The years flew by, as time refuses to slow down, to allow us to savor those moments, with those we love.
Approaching one year since the world stopped making any sense. I know she lives, in a place of indescribable beauty and happiness. I know she wants us to remember her with joy, and gratitude for the time and love we shared. So, why does it hurt so damn much every day? Looking at that empty swing as I go about maintaining a yard that once brought such pride, and now is a hollow reminder of what happiness     was. I will not falter in my responsibilities. I will love and care for my son, and never let Sharry down. I just cannot see when or where the pain will stop. Perhaps, the emptiness of that swing, matches the void left in my heart when she left. How that void will or will not be filled, remains to be seen, in a future I never wanted to face without her by my side.

Robert, what beautiful thoughts - Jack has been gone a year and there are days when I wonder what is God\'s purpose in keeping me here - you are so fortunate to have Matthew to take care of and to spend time with - both of you loving a wife and mother - I know right where you are coming from and pray you will find blessings in your lives. You sound like two great guys and I have no doublt Sharry was a magnificent person - as was my Jack. I am thinking of you both and your writing is so lovely I can feel what you are going through. Take care of each other and I am sure Sharry is smiling down on you both - sending hugs and the love of a sad old woman. Agnes

Robert, I\'ve just passed the one year mark. I believe as men we have a different mind set (no macho intent meant) in that we lost the person who drove us to do our best at being provider, lover, confidant and protector. Unfortunately there are things that we couldn\'t protect them from.
You lost your wife but you still have your son that still needs you and depends on you. That\'s what life is about, being needed.

Best Regards, George

Bob what can I say. I totally hear what your words and heart are saying. You are very lucky to be able to say you appreciated every bit of time with her. In the early part of my grief I was very critical of myself that at times I was complacent or took our time together for granted at times never imagining what the future unfolds. How to fill the void. Incredibly tough question that God will allow to unfold as he see\' s fit. . Bob I will tell you one thing. In this journey I have been incredibly low many times but somehow and someway God always provided me the resources I need to keep moving forward. That doesnt mean I dont languish in pain for extended periods of time. More and more I am learning to surrender myself to his will. I totally get the future being redefined in a completely different way. You and Matthew are always in my thoughts and prayers. Gerry
