Biodiversity-driven integrative approaches for healthy dairy farms
Biodiversity is a key component of achieving high-quality milk products with minimal environmental impacts, and provides multiple benefits in dairy farming including improving soil quality, reducing weed and pest pressures, and increasing farm profitability (Fig. 1). Many of the strategies for enhancing soil health and improving milk product quality involve plant and animal species, including using herbaceous crop leys on dairy fields with a variety of plants that have antimicrobial and antifungal properties to reduce diseases in livestock.
For example, one study of dairy farmers in Denmark found that a ley of caraway (Carum carvi), parsley (Petroselinum crispum), chicory (Cichorium intybis), and common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) had an antifungal effect, while wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) had anthelmintic properties. Adding these herbs to the leys improved the quality of the dairy products. This is because these plants are rich in essential oils that can protect dairy cows from fungus and parasites.the botany at dairy farm
