Interestingly, they were made in Korea but if I’d bought them in Taiwan, they would have remained in my mind as a souvenir of that country. I adored them but kept finding reasons not to get them. They were so easy to carry – they took up no space at all! I could have given a pair to each of two granddaughters and kept a pair for myself.

With its striking terrain between the coast and valleys, Taitung is the best place in Taiwan for cycling expeditions. Multitude of cycling trails tempt outdoor sports addicts to pay a cycling pilgrimage to Taitung. First, the 15 km Guanshan Bike Loop 關山環鎮自行車道 is the earliest and most integral bicycle path in Taiwan.
The treehouse is an abandoned warehouse on the site of Former Tait & Co. Merchant Warehouse, which once imported and exported sugar, opium, and other goods from Taiwan. After it was abandoned, it was taken over by banyan trees.
Walking along the East Coast Scenic Area, you may see Sanxiantai from afar. If you visit early in the morning, you can witness the Sunrise at Sanxiantai as well. I will write more about other key cities along the East coast – Yilan and Hualien – in separate posts. Check the local weather here or ask your hotel before heading there. Taitung – often referred to as the Garden of Taiwan – is surrounded by lush green mountains and a turquoise ocean.
Looking at the other reviews I guess that it depends very much when you come there and which artists are performing. I was there on a Friday evening and I liked it, because there was some very beautiful guitar music and a funny clown-like person entertaining the kids. There is some food and some stalls with handcraft stuff and some shops in the containers too. It was nice and I believe quiet a good place to go with kids on an evening. So bringing home a few bottles of a local Taiwanese beer isn't a bad conversation starter either. Siwei Night Market – more for foodies than souvenir shoppers, this market is near Taitung Night Market and offers an overwhelming amount of Taiwanese cuisine and street food.

It can be a bit tricky to get things right in retail so your feedback is really helpful. Lyn was working that day so I'll share your kind thoughts with her. This shop has a great range of souvenirs (some of which aren't found in similar shops and at good pricing. Not only did I savor traditional choices – like red bean, mung bean, peanuts, matcha, etc. – but I also enjoy creative flavors – like swordfish. All that to say, even if mochi is not your thing, give it a try in Taitung.
Shilin is Taipei’s largest night market with over 500 stalls. Our favourite foods at Shilin included the Hai You Pork Ribs and the Bin Small Sausage in Large Sausage. J loved the noisy and colourful arcade games and the endless novelty items displayed in the souvenir shops throughout the market.

You will be able to enjoy a meal in nearby establishments, A Hong Fried Chicken Specialty Store and Jizhou Shaved Ice Mountain, since they are located just about 5 minutes’ walk away from Changju Hotel. Taitung bus station, allowing a good connection throughout the city, is within 0.3 miles from Changju Hotel.
I specifically love shopping for souvenirs in the various street markets, night markets and floating markets. The colorful shops keep drawing me in to shop more and more. In the city center of Taitung, you'll have easy access to Taitung Forest Park, Beinan Wenhua Park, Tiehuacun. The most famous attractions locally are Oregon rich fishing port.
