The Advent of Lasik Eye Surgery
LASIK and PRK are the two most common refractive procedures performed today. During your consultation at our LASIK clinic in Windsor, Canada (just across the border from Detroit, Michigan ) the procedure of choice will be discussed with you in detail.
LASIK
Laser in-situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the most commonly performed refractive procedure at our Windsor, Canada practice, also serving Detroit, Michigan patients. In this operation, the LASIK surgeon uses an automated instrument called a microkeratome to create a thin, uniform flap in the cornea and then folds back that flap to apply a computerized laser treatment to the underlying corneal tissue (stroma). This laser is not a heat laser, but rather it ablates, or vaporizes, tissue away to microscopically reshape the corneal surface. After the computerized laser therapy is applied, the LASIK surgeon replaces the flap, where it naturally re-adheres in its original position.
LASIK treatment microscopically reshapes the cornea, resulting in greatly improved visual acuity without glasses or contacts. In just 24 hours following LASIK surgery, the vast majority of people see 20/40 or better. This continues to improve as the days pass, the cornea healing with the assistance of medicated drops. Many people are able to return to work in one to two days. Discomfort is generally limited to some mild burning sensations or foreign body sensations in the eyes for a few hours following LASIK treatment.
Regardless of whether you undergo LASIK or PRK, your vision will be blurry and hazy for the first day. Plan to have someone drive you home after the procedure. A good rest or sleep is highly advised after surgery, as your eyes may feel slightly irritated.
The first post-operative check is done to make sure the flap is nicely in place and that your medicated drops are being used correctly.

Your vision may fluctuate between clear and blurry for the initial few weeks. Your eyes will be dry in the first few days to weeks after LASIK or PRK surgery, even though they will not feel particularly dry. This dryness of the corneal surface can cause some visual blurring, which will improve with the continued use of artificial lubricating drops.
