The 14 year battle my wife Kris fought
Here is Kris Dickau battle with cancer timeline:
November 1999:
Visit Mid-Wife to confirm our third pregnancy and during exam found lump on the right breast.
A week later biopsy done at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Results came back that it was breast cancer and since she was 16 weeks along in the pregnancy it would be high risk. So a week or so later trip to Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa, FL. There is when the doctors told us to abort the baby because it will not survive and Kris could not wait. The words after that we have no idea what was said except we needed to pray. After prayer we decided and told the doctors that aborting the baby was not an option need a new plan. The new plan was a lumpectomy surgery.
She went through surgery fine but after about a week from surgery she had a massive infection which required a second surgery to reopen the site then leave it open and keep having to have the site packed daily. Then a month later third surgery to close again. Then a few weeks later Chemo started.
Mean while our high risk OB would have weekly meetings and discuss weekly what issues we would face in case of an early delivery. She finished Chemo a few weeks before May 1, 2000 when Bobby was born at 9 lbs 8 oz and two weeks planned early delivery. Then a few weeks after radiation begins. Then we went years cancer free.
April 2012
Fast forward April 2012, due to visible signs of a problem we went to Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center. After talking to Dr Webber, and getting told that what she had what is call Angiosarcoma of the breast. He also said that this type of cancer does not have a cure at this time. We decided to go with a double mastectomy in May 2012. The results were that we did a smart move because there was pre-cancerous cells on the left side. This cancer they believe was from the radiation treatments back in 2000. Angiosarcoma is a rare cancer so there is a small amount of people that get this cancer so finding a cure is small that they have to work with. This is the time that I wish the internet did not have so much information available. So the survival rate that I read is not good. But like I told my wife then and now with a small percentage to work for a cure that the survival statics are not accurate.
Then we meet Dr Brigg at East Tennessee Cancer Specialist, He again told us that this cancer does not have a cure but we proceeded to do chemo again.
October 2014
After all the CT Scans from August 2012 to July 2014 the scans were all clear. Then came the October 2014 CT scan. More bad news again as the scan showed the cancer was back again. With this diagnose Dr Brigg told Kris to file for disability which we did the next day after this report. This time the cancer attacked the liver, abdomen, and rib area was affected. This Angiosarcoma is not curable and is terminal at this time. Her cancer is at stage 4. But Dr Brigg said that we need to start Taxol as fast and hard as possible. We also need a drug called Avastin which is a test drug. We tried to have Cigna cover the cost but they refused however the drug manufacture covered the cost. In January 2014 the first scans since being on Taxol & Avastin the tumors where reducing in all areas. Great news and hope that we have bet this thing.
March 2014
Kris is dealing with a lot of pain and Dr Brigg again tells her she needs to stop working the part time job at our church and get the pain under control. So with this report forced me in sending an email to Congressman Jimmy Duncan’s office for help to get her disability.
Then CT scan on Monday 3-17 shows that the cancer had adapted itself to the chemo drugs she has been taking up till now. The cancer cells are back at her liver and pancreas which is giving her continues pain. Two weeks ago she will start a different chemo drug called Daxol which has even other side effects that need to be watched. The doctor also increased her pain meds which will mean her driving days are just about over.
Now the disability has been approved with the help from Congressman Duncan’s office and in a few weeks she and also the kids will get Social Security which will be a help.
May 14, 2014
CT scan was showing that the cancer has continued to spread and that there was a perforation in the abdomen. The doctor said that there would be no more Chemo that would be done and that Hospice will be called in. On May 14 & 15 Hospice started and they did a very good job helping to keep her comfortable in the few days that she had left. On May 18, 2014 Kris celebrated her 53 birthday with her husband Bill, children Billy, Katie & Bobby and her mother Joan from Florida. The night of May 18 into 19 was a very restless night for Kris. She was awake most of the night and morning. I said to Kris somewhere in the early morning hours about how my dad spent so much time with my mom for the 10 years battling Alzheimer's Disease, which I stayed with Kris in those final days and hours even sleeping on the couch those last days.
On Monday, May 19 the kids said ”I love you mom” as they left for school. When they were gone Kris opened hers eyes briefly at me and then took her last breath at about 8:00am and now she is home with her Lord and other loved ones.
On Thursday, May 22 we had Received Friends at Highland Memorial Funeral Home and long line of friends. And then on Friday, May 23 we had a Memorial Service @ then the grave side service.
After 14 years of battling cancer and being involved with all the kids program, and various activities. God’s perfect timing took her home and now she is cured of the cancer forever.
