It wasn't real, dont worry. Some aspects of the movie were loosely inspired by real life serial killer Ed Gein and his crimes that actually took place in Wisconsin and not Texas but the movie itself was fictional. It was marketed as being based on a real story that actually happened to draw attention so people would believe it and want to watch it.
There's a house they filmed the remake in, in your area. I think it's south of Dallas. The house in the original was relocated and it's now a B&B. The story was inspired by Ed Gien like Kiwasicu said. Ed Gien was the inspiration for many thriller movies including Silence of the Lambs. I like learning stuff :)
Lol. The 2 comments above are very correct. It's based on true events because of the close inspiration of Ed Gien out of Plainfield, Wisconsin. There's a lot of videos on YT about him. Interesting critter. It's a good study if you have time.
Also while you're at it, look up Albert Fish. The vampire of Brooklyn. I guess I should say if you're not sensitive to someone eating children. Now I look like I should be on a watch list. Lol. I like Interesting things like this. In fact i remember doing a report on Charles Manson when I was in high school. My dad had to go in and talk to my teacher.
