Teaching Foxy

As most of you know, Foxy's favorite place in the house is on the bed.  She spends a lot of time there and we have our "our time". a time where she rubs up against my back with her back while she wiggles herself along on her side while I'm putting my socks and shoes on or off.  Or, we'll just lie on the bed and play and cuddle.  It's been great!  But, last Saturday, Vickie brought her daughter's old mattress and box springs to replace the 30 year old set I got when my mom died.  It's a fancy set with pillow tops on both sides and the box springs are firm.  And all of this is really, really thick, making the set 2 or 3 times taller than the old one.  It makes it easier for me to get out of bed and I wish I'd had it when I had my knee problem.  But, there drawbacks.  For me, it means I have to bend over in two just to tie my shoes and I'm unsteady just sitting on it because my feet don't touch the floor!  It might as well be Mount Everest for Foxy.  Her front paws can't reach the top!  Where it was an easy jump to get on the bed, now I have to help her.  I started closing the door when I left for work so she wouldn't try to jump up and hurt herself.  She needs a couple of steps.  Money is tight as you know and those steps are in the future.  But, she loves the new mattress when she's on it and shouldn't have to wait for me.  So, I've come up with a temporary solution.  I have two of those under bed storage boxes where I keep all the old photographs(You wouldn't believe how many and I'll be trying to put more up here in the future.) and I've pulled one of them out and put one if her "blankys" on top for her to use as a step.  I practically had to pull her on it to show her that it could be used to get on the bed.  We've done it several times and I thought she had learned to use it.  So far, she won't do it on her own.  Only when I show and/or force her.  Guess it'll take a while before she learns she can get on the bed by herself.  Wish her luck.
