Upon fermenting to sugar dryness, the wines were fined & clarified. The oak & tank batches were blended & left in tank to allow integration & equilibrium of the final wine. A fine expression of the classic Riesling grape from the iconic Alsace region on France. Mittnacht Freres have been producing biodynamic wines for quite some time and are well known for their refined wines. They own some parcels in the Grand Crus like “Rosaker” or “Osterberg”.
This Vermentino has gorgeous aromatics and florals and a textural savoury palate with a zesty citrus finish. As is the tradition in Italy – it’s perfectly partnered with sardines. Over the next 20 years the Arnold family almost single-handedly created the Cradle Coast wine region. Every vineyard hand-built, hand-planted to the exact specifications – no compromise, no concession.
In contrast to record warm temperatures in December and January, February saw a cool change. This allowed fantastic retention of acidity in the fruit. We had below average rainfall throughout the season, which meant disease pressure was non-existent, allowing us to take our time as the fruit ripened, and harvest only as it reached perfection. Crop levels were just below forecast giving us excellent depth of flavour. Coupled with near-perfect balance and racy acidity, a winemaker couldn’t ask for better material. Making wines from this year’s fruit has been an absolute privilege.
2020 Mewstone D’Entrecasteaux Channel Chardonnay, A$60, shows intense white peach aromas, with tropical hints and underlying complexity. The palate’s full-bodied and full-flavoured, with broad, developing flavours. Caillard wrote, “Attractive stone fruit, grilled nut, vanilla aromas with some musky notes. Creamy and full-bodied, with layers of stone fruits, malt and hazelnut. Supple textures – and integrated, minerally, long acidity.” The wine has generous, immediate drinkability and is nearing its best now. Dubbed as the most plastic grape variety, Chardonnay is used in the production of white wines.
Chardonnay is now in second place behind pinot noir, which is in a distant lead. The nose is lemon sherbet and honeysuckle with perfumed hints of bath salts, champagne melon and kaffir lime leaves. On the palate it is all about lemon curd, fresh pears, lime marmalade and dried nectarines with a slight suggestion of struck match. Depending on where you are located, your wine will be shipped with either Australia Post's Wine Delivery Service or specialist wine delivery service Anonymous Wine Freight.

Wallington found it, “Savoury, with spices, preserved lemon and mealy characters. Driving acidity.” For all its complexity, the wine retains supporting sweet fruit flavours and the balance is excellent. My notes finish, “at its best” but, knowing the provenance and how almost every Freycinet wine ages superbly, I’ll add “will age further, gracefully”. 2019 Brown Brothers Patricia Chardonnay, A$48, won wide approval, particularly from Wallington, who told us, “savoury, citrus fruits. Caillard thought the palate “slightly hard, with pronounced acidity”, while I found it beautifully balanced. It’s fine on both nose and in the mouth, yet with intense stone fruit and a little cashew.
