Talking About the Future

 
Well, report cards came out for 2nd quarter. I have yet to see my daughter's (she keeps forgetting to give it to me), but I'm sure it's fine. I saw my son's. Only 1 F (English). And he actually PASSED CIVICS. After everything that went on with that this past semester. So now he doesn't have to take it again. I'm very happy about that.
 
Since he seems to be making somewhat of an effort (probably not as much as he should, but definitely more than he has been), I offered him a deal. Previously (after failing English 2 in summer school), I told him that I was not going to throw away my money on summer school again. However, now that he seems to be trying, I told him that if he passes English 3 this year, I would be willing to pay for him to re-take English 2 this summer. He said that was "very fair". And I reiterated that all the teachers, assistants & I are all willing to help him pass--he just has to make the effort. So we'll see what happens. I hope he takes this challenge on.
 
And it led us to talking about the future--what will happen once he graduates, and what CANNOT happen (i.e., being a bum & playing video games all day). I laid out possibilities to consider, asked him what he may be interested in & what he's definitely NOT interested in. I also gave him some food for thought as far as what living expenses were like (the need for security deposit on an apartment & needing to save up for that, what utilities are, what having a car entails money-wise, etc.). I'm hoping that plants some seeds of motivation in that head of his.
