Taking Stock
Hello Community and Friends,
Last week I saw my Neurologist and she stated I was holding my own and did not increase my dosages (Sinemet, Primidone and Tramadol). She said she did not need to see me for anther 6 months.
I also saw my Internist my blood pressure was 117/70 with a pulse rate of 64. My blood work was normal (Cholesterol, liver functions, Triglycerides, etc). I see her every three months. I take a bunch of meds for high blood pressure and high Cholestrol.
I felt good about my Doctor meetings.
Heart disease is very prevalent on the male side of my family. My father died on his 54th birthday. My father's 8 brothers all died in their 50's or early 60's. My brother, Louis, was kayaking off Malibu on December 30, 2011 and made a 911 call complaining of chest pains and trouble breathing. Thirty minutes after my brother's call his overturned kayak and life vest were found by the Coast Guard. Louis's body has yet to be found. Such a very lousy way to end the year.
Taking Stock...Yesterday (January 25) was my 70th birthday. Mickie and I celebrated at "The Girl and The Goat" restaurant. We came home and shared a bottle of Champagne.
I never expected to live much beyond 60 and half expected not to reach 60 based on my family health history. I made 70 and that is a WOW and maybe a family record. I am very happily married, have two really neat sons and a wonderful daughter-in-law. I have run two successful companies. One of which I founded. I have traveled most of the world
I have Parkinson's. I can live with that. I can and will fight it. Parkinson's is just another ceiling (borrowing from Paula).
All in all I have had a good life and I will continue to do so even with the Parkinson's Challenge.

My deepest condolences concerning the loss of your brother. It sounded like he was doing something he enjoyed doing at the time. Both sides of my family are long livers, 90\'s/100\'s, but Karen\'s family has always had heart and stroke problems in their 50\'s & 60\'s. Karen is now 67, and only one uncle of hers has lived longer than she currently is. When she turned 50 she was in a panic. You have beat the odds, and even with the PD, you can still live a healthy life for years to come. It was good that you truly celebrated that 70th birthday. What are you going to do on your 80th? Way to go Joe. You have beaten the odds so far - so keep going - only this time with PD. Italy would be an awesome trip for you and your wife! And where will you go for your 90th?

Italy ooooooo one of my favorite places (although we were mainly in rome) I want to go back and just drive all over... how bout Africa for you 90th??? (that\'s somewhere i\'ve always wanted to go... maybe someday haha)

Thanks for the support. For my 90th...I have done Africa. I have yet to see South America. It will have to be SA and a cooking school in Chile!

I am so sorry to hear the news of your brother Louis. What a tragic loss and a terrible end to what must have been a pretty grim year what with your diagnosis too.
Your outlook on life is as admiral as ever, so positive and good to hear.
I\'ve only just found this post but as you know I already knew about your recent birthday, still can\'t ever have enough celebrations over things like that so congrat\'s once again!
I know you were planning a trip to Spain but are you venturing over to Italy too. Italy is my favourite place in the world, we\'ve travelled throughout it as we tend to go back and find a new spot each year, I love the food, climate and way of life. That is going to be some cooking you are doing there, Spanish and Italian, I need to come to tea when you get back hahahaha!!

Thanks for your encouraging message.
We have made our airline and hotel reservations for Madrid and Lisbon. We will spend most of our time in Portugal. I am looking forward to visiting the museums and wine country (not necessarily in that order).
