We spent a couple of hours viewing the exhibits, but this remarkable collection, so very well presented deserves more like a full day. Travelling around Taiwan this taste of Europe and the rest of the world has got to be in the top ten attractions. Last stop today is Cijin Island, a long narrow island situated almost within a stone’s throw of the mainland with a population of about 30,000. It is connected by a tunnel at one end, while a ferry services the other end. We poke our nose along various narrow streets in the car, appears to us that it is quite poor and a bit of a backwater compared with at least some parts of Kaohsiung City.
We really enjoyed ourselves and had it not been such a short trip would have loved to catch the HSR South and also gone hiking in the central region. Hills in and around Taipei – there are many, eg Jin Mian Shan, Jiantan Shan, Elephant Mountain, Hemei Mountain, Lion's 台東市伴手禮 Head Mountain, Warship or Battleship Rock, Wu Liao Jian, Huang Di Dian, etc. Some are easier than others but note that "EASY" is a very relative term here. Many of these hills I would class as the equivalent of the Glasshouse Mountains near Brisbane in height.
So far, Taiwan sort of feels like a mix between China and Japan, which works well for me because they are two countries that I love. Thanks for the replies, have decided to go late October/early November. We're thinking of going Melbourne to Guangzhou, then to Beijing for a few days, then Taipei, then home via Guangzhou.
The local tour operator will pick up and drop off at your hotel. The guide is very friendly and spoke English well, including Japanese. It would have been nicer to extend the stay in the hot springs hotels longer (2 nights vs. Caleb was both knowledgeable and generous in sharing history and culture of the locations we visited. We talked at the outset about our interests and he incorporated all of those into the day trip. Wonderful English speaker , great sense of humour and someone who made our tour of Taipei memorable .

A long day behind the wheel, sometimes a bit hair raising but we survived unscathed and my beloved and I are still talking and the relationship solid. First stop is Chikeshan which we reached by deviating probably about 20kms off our route, about 12kms of it up a narrow, at times quite steep and very winding road.
It's possible but i'd rather spend at least a night in Jiufen so you are not so rushed. Lots of night markets around the several universities in Taipei – lots of nice places to visit. Hard for me to say as I do speak, read and write Mandarin so it's been easy for me. However I noticed many places in Taipei have English in the menu. Or you can point at what other people are having if you see something you fancy. About the night market in Taiwan, I suggest that try little bit at the beginning, and see whether you can resisit or not, there are various kind of food in any night market in Taiwan.
And Taiwan really isn't a hot spot for us at all. Yeah I did try that, but the cheapest fare was around $720 in total, excluding transport to Macau. I thought I could save some bucks buying tickets separately, given the cheap fare for MEL-HKG leg, but the HKG-TPE just blew it all lol.

Overshot by about 50kms adding 100kms to our travel at the end of the day! Anyway we survived it all otherwise without incident and are happy to be home about midday 17th.

We have no GPS and if we had one it would be in Chinese, perhaps that would be better than Anna’s iPhone GPS, perhaps not. Lilly and I are still on speaking terms notwithstanding the navigator blaming the driver and vice versa. A real adventure making it eventually to a car park, Hall 3, adjacent to the Taipeh 101 mall.
