Taitung - Where to Buy Fun Souvenirs
This artsy cafe has Taitung coffee as well as other coffee and teas and a small but interesting menu. Taitung's night life has been described as subdued, that may be true however there are of course some bars. What Taitung does have however, is a rather large number of cafes. Since Taitung County actually grows coffee beans it is also possible to find truly local coffee at several establishments. Two buildings really, one houses the tourism center and library. The other has exhibition spaces, one of which houses the Aboriginal Artifacts Exhibition.
Fengyuan in Taichung was once the center of all things lacquer here in Taiwan. In fact, at one point it was said that 99% of the country’s lacquerwares were made in the area. Today, you’ll find that it’s home to the Fengyuan Lacquer Art Museum which is a great place to learn about the history 最炫伴手禮 of lacquer art during the Japanese colonial period. More remote Orchid Island (蘭嶼 or Lanyu) is home to Taiwan’s most remote aboriginal tribe, the Tao people. The Tao are famous for their Flying Fish Festival, partially underground houses, and beautiful hand-carved traditional canoes.
Before entering town, you’ll pass Water Running Upward (水往上流遊憩區), a stream that appears to flow uphill. Dulan Sugar Factory (新東糖廠文化園區) is hippie central, with a musical performance venue, café, restaurant, and bar serving Dulan’s own Highway 11 beer. Nearby, seafood lovers can head to Fugang Fish Harbor to enjoy one of the harborside seafood restaurants. This is also where ferries depart for Green Island (see “Offshore Islands of Taitung” section below). If you have your own wheels, also consider making the trip to Wuling Green Tunnel (武陵綠色隧道), one of several “green tunnels” across Taiwan. Also read about the more famous Sicao Green Tunnel in Tainan.
Accessible and affordable, it lies in the northern part of Taidong city, in the close outskirts. Big, and well kept park, it's ideal for a picnic, as well as getting acquainted with Taiwan's mysterious prehistory. It's a burial site hiding a priceless and remarkable content of objects of all sorts and skeletons. The park also offers reconstructions of houses, a training center for youth, and an ancient boat. It has clean bathrooms and trails connecting every side of it. Taitung Forest Park is a natural oasis that boasts an extensive network perfect for cycling.
The park is expanded by approximately 10km with different vegetation and trails are designed in unique and adventurous ways that will keep you three hours busy in exploration. You can rent the battery or manual bicycle for a ride in the park and that is available at affordable prices in nearby shops. The park has a restroom at various locations and the complete information is highlighted in the Park in bilingual languages. But there are no restaurants in the Park or water dispensers or vending machines.
Chun Cui He Milk Tea is a popular souvenir from a Taiwanese beverage brand. Locals and tourists loved the the unique flavors of the drink which is placed in a bottle container. It is also sold in other neighboring countries like Singapore where it instantly clicked and became a trend. Take a moment to reflect on all the amazing experiences you’ve had, and know that Taitung will always hold a special place in your heart. No matter where you choose to stay, be sure to book your accommodations well in advance, as the festivals can draw large crowds and accommodations can fill up quickly. Some festivals may offer early bird discounts or package deals, so it’s best to plan ahead and book your tickets in advance.
I don't see the natural environment of a so-called forest park is fully conserved in a proper way. As it tend to be wet and cold all year round, it becomes the perfect condition for tea plantation. Alishan tea is an oolong tea with a light orchid aroma, hints of fruits and a light creaminess, it’s definitely something tea-lovers will enjoy! The tea leaves have to be steeped in hot water that’s ideally between 90-95ºC to achieve the close-to-perfect brew. Alternatively, if you have time to spare, you may place an online order through their website and have it delivered to your hotel at a fee. Do note that it will take at least 4 days for the order to be processed, or even longer if it’s near festive seasons.
It's also a popular spot for bathing while watching the sunset or sunrise, the latter being more famous due to its eastern facing location. The county boasts several scenic spots worth exploring, such as Green Island, located off the southeastern coast. It is known for its crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, historical sites and unique geological formations. You can explore sites such as the Green Island Human Rights Culture Park and enjoy snorkelling or diving.
You can also take bus #56 from Gancheng (干城) or Xinwuri (新烏日) train stations, and it stops right in front of Rainbow Village. It sure tops the list of most “Instagrammable” places in Taichung, but huge Lihpao Discovery Land, one of my favorite theme parks in Taiwan, is another contender. This past September another section of the South Link Highway road expansion project has opened up to traffic.
When visiting the beach at Fugang Fishing Port with your kids, it’s important to prioritize beach safety. Keep an eye on them at all times and make sure they have appropriate swimwear. Encourage fun beach activities like building sandcastles and playing in the water. Swim alongside graceful sea turtles or marvel at the intricate formations of coral. With its warm and inviting waters, Taitung offers an incredible snorkeling experience that you won’t want to miss.
