Siaoyeliou – Just a couple of kilometers north of Taitung city this beach offers the most beautiful rock formations on the southern coast. It follows the old train track out to near the new train station before heading back along the river eventually going through the Forest and Seashore Parks. When the hotel staff recommended fried chicken, I thought I heard wrongly as I was rather surprised since fried chicken is so common place and how good can fried chicken taste in Taitung.
All shops were closed except further inside the park during weekdays. Glad to spend time to walk around and enjoy the natural beauty. I found the town interesting and scenic and well worth the visit on your way up the east coast. The city has an artistic feel to it and is much more relaxing than other Taiwanese cities.
There’s also some original wooden Train Warehouses (台東舊站機關車庫 and 台東鐵道藝術村261倉庫) and Old Taitung Train Station Platform (台東舊站轉車台). The Beinan site has produced several artifacts linking Taiwan’s ancient peoples to the Austronesian cultures found throughout the South Pacific, from Madagascar to Hawaii. Most impressive among the artifacts found here are 200+ stone burial coffins. The site has even been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Taiwan doesn’t have any yet).
The other has exhibition spaces, one of which houses the Aboriginal Artifacts Exhibition. By plane, Taitung is served by a local airport with flights to Taipei, Lanyu and Lyudao. This might be a good first stop in finding information on any local aboriginal or temple events that are going on, maps and general information. National Taitung University Library is an exquisite modern architecture built in harmony with the surrounding nature.
When reaching the bottom, the hot spring would be on your LEFT side. You can see a small part of the colored rock with a bit of steaming. You need to cross the water (around above the knee height - middle October, heavy rain few days before), and circumvent the rock from across the where you started, towards the hot spring. Some of the trees were starting changing colors to a bit dark red/yellow-ish when we visited in middle October .
For adventurous travelers, I recommend driving up the mountain to La Wei of Forest Coffee Plantations. It is super challenging to drive off-road up the unlighted hills. (We had many doubtful moments and almost attempted to turn around.) But the nocturne view of the lighted city below and glowing moon in the sky makes the adventure so worthwhile. It is one of the most beautiful scenic spots on the East Coast. Surrounded by the coral reef, the island features lush greenery and excavated geological landscapes.
