Taitung Travel Recommendations for 2024
If you only have 2 days to spend in Taitung City, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here. City Super is the nicest grocery store / supermarket in Taichung in my opinion. It’s got the biggest selection of imported goods in the city. Stuff is expensive, but quality is unbeatable, especially for the veggies and deli items. Sanxiantai, a small offshore island, was once home to one of the Amis tribes.
When you reach Daren (達人), Highway 9 veers inland and crosses to the west coast in only about 30 minutes, then shoots south to Kenting National Park at the southern tip of Taiwan. This pleasant section on the west coast offers views over small deserted beaches before reaching Hengchun, the southernmost township in Taiwan, which is technically 台東 伴手禮 within Kenting National Park. For some, Taitung City may be the end of their east coast journey. But if you want to extend your trip all the way to the beaches of Kenting National Park at the southern tip of Taiwan, there are two ways to go about it. As much as I love Taitung, the real beauty of the county is in the countryside.
The Taroko Eternal Spring Changchun Shrine sits atop a natural spring and was built in honour of the many who lost their lives building the highway through Taroko National Park. The observation deck at the Alishan House Hotel, where we stayed, is one of the best sunset spots in the Alishan Scenic Area. The Alishan National Scenic Area is a refreshing mix of forest and wilderness and the Alishan sunrises draw visitors from all over the world. Animation Alley is another great pit stop and kids will love the short walk along the cartoon and Magna themed street art. When signing a contract, if a signature is used instead of a personal seal/official stamp, the signature must be the same as on one’s passport. Search real estate web pages, or visit a local real estate company to find your favorite house.
Route #1 is the faster one, which involves following Highway 9 along the coast and then across to the west coast of Taiwan for the final leg down into Kenting. The route is the same if you take the train from Taitung to Fangliao, then transfer onto a bus to Kenting . Route #2 is a slow route on small roads, suitable for scooter riders only. This elevated, winding road runs though the lower hills of the Coastal Mountain Range between highways 9 and 11, sticking closer to the former in the southern half.
Mr. Goose (鵝肉先生) – two locations in Hualien serving succulent steamed goose. Yuan Xiang Bamboo Rice (原香嘟論竹筒飯) – food stall at Dongdamen Night Market that only sells bamboo rice. And when you scroll down further, I included a more detailed explanation of each food in Hualien and where you can find the local specialty. If you consider yourself a foodie or someone who is excited to try new food in a new country, then this post is for you.

Although it’s not my cup of tea, and I’d rather sea dolphins in the wild such as on this dolphin and whale watching tour, Farglory is quite popular. If you’re exploring the area by scooter, you can even go as far as Sanxiantai on coastal Highway 11 in one day, which we did one time. Just follow Highway 30, which connects highway 9 with the coast.
