Taitung City Souvenirs

A well-made guitar from the Philippines should impress your friend in a band. A kubing from Mindanao will bring a unique twang to your music-making. In fact, you can find random groups of men huddled outside a sari-sari store, passing a glass of rum or beer around. You can find these in 台東伴手禮 most convenience stores and supermarkets. While there is novelty in buying from a “diver”, they’re not always the best quality and might not legitimate pearls at all. I recommend buying from a brick and mortar shop where they issue certificates to prove the authenticity of your purchase.
This is five-star hotel for those with a large budget and an appreciation for amenities. It offers all the things a hotel of its stature should including spa and free gym. This Taitung-sized hypermarket should cover you for most of your daily needs and provides the best selection of imported food and drinks in town. On the 15th of the first lunar month is the Festival which in Taitung is played out with a unique and spectacular display known as the Bombing of Master Han Dan. In the course of this display a man wearing nothing more than a pair of shorts and a face mask stands upon a sedan chair while onlookers lob strings of lit firecrackers at him.

The train line follows the coast here, before crossing over to the west coast of Taiwan. More remote Orchid Island (蘭嶼 or Lanyu) is home to Taiwan’s most remote aboriginal tribe, the Tao people. The Tao are famous for their Flying Fish Festival, partially underground houses, and beautiful hand-carved traditional canoes. It’s a popular stop for drivers on the highway just a few minutes north of Xiaoyeliu.
Luye – To the north of Taitung in the Inner Rift Valley, it is a great place to drink tea and an especially popular spot for paragliding. Also is a good spot for cycling for the less adventurous. This artsy cafe has Taitung coffee as well as other coffee and teas and a small but interesting menu. Taitung's night life has been described as subdued, that may be true however there are of course some bars. What Taitung does have however, is a rather large number of cafes. Since Taitung County actually grows coffee beans it is also possible to find truly local coffee at several establishments.
I recommend visiting Railway Art Village in the evening, not only for the music but also because that’s when the various other cafés, restaurants, and shops on site come alive. There are often various lights and lanterns lit up after dark, giving the whole village a romantic yet artsy vibe. The most famous attraction on the archaeological grounds is the collection of “Moon Pillars” (labeled 卑南文化月形石柱 on GoogleMaps). These are some of the oldest historic landmarks in Taiwan. You can reach these in less than 10 minutes on foot from the train station. Upon entering the archaeological site, you’ll need to hang a sharp right and cross a short bridge over the road.

But you can also catch bus#8101orTaiwan Tourist Shuttle #8101Ato access it. Alternatively, join thisTaitung East Coast guided tourfor a stress-free trip. Another great pitstop along Taiwan’s scenic East Coast is Jinzun Recreation Area. While it might seem like just another rest stop along Highway 11, its incredible coastal views set it apart from others.
Orchid Island’s Flying Fish Festival takes place from spring to summer. There is no specific date, as each village has its own celebration on different days every year. On Green Island, get shaved ice served in a seashell here. This package deal includes DIY all-you-can-eat BBQ, a must for most locals when visiting islands like Green Island or Penghu.

Bus 8101 and a few others make the trip from Taitung – use GoogleMaps for the current times. However, it’s not possible or easy to access the water here. The grounds include a café, restaurant, organic farms, cultural displays, and gorgeous scenery, but the highlight is the dance performances.
While frequent buses travel between Taitung Station and downtown, having to ride one of them every time you want to eat short rice noodles or explore a colorful temple would be a major pain. Some of my favorite Taitung attractions are located in the heart of the city. Moreover, Taitung occupies a small enough area that you can easily explore in the morning or evening, before and after you head out for daytime excursions. Although it is not an ideal shopping place like Taipei or Kaohsiung… but if you want to choose a few items as souvenirs when coming to Taitung, you can still find many interesting things. Some of the items you can buy as gifts include local postcards, traditional craft items, etc.
If you’re planning to visit Green Island or Orchid Island, getting a package deal can save you a lot of trouble. Here’s a package deal for Green Island and a package deal for Orchid Island. You’ll still be traveling independently, but the packages include transportation, scooter , accommodation, and activities. If driving south from Taitung city, Highway 9 will follow the coast past a super long stretch of beach at Taimali (太麻里). Dao people are known for their white loincloths, hand-carved canoes, semi-underground houses, and Flying Fish Festival (see “Taitung Events” section at the end).

There are also 3 lakes inside the park, you can swim in one of them during summer. Look for handcrafted items such as pottery, wooden carvings, leather goods, or traditional Quebecois crafts like “Santons” and “Toutou” . Actual discount will be based on the discounted amount displayed in the shopping cart. There are often modern (but aboriginal-focused) music festivals held at locations on the coast in Taitung.
Currently, the Taiwan Open of Surfing event is hosted in Jinzun, Taitung as well as the Challenge Taiwan swimming course. More recently, athletes and sponsors have been advocating Taitung as a training residence for stand-up paddle, kayaking, and swimming.
