It binds to progesterone and estrogen receptors. The target cells include the female reproductive tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland.
Once it binds to the receptor, progesterone will reduce the frequency of release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus and reduce the preovulatory increase in LH (luteinizing hormone).
