The first time I had shingles was 25 yrs. ago and my body dealt with it better then. I still had PHN for 8 months and took vicodin. I have had shingles 3 times in the last 10 months for a variety of reasons - stress, medications and an unsympathetic primary physician. My gynecologist diagnosed the pain in my breast as shingles and prescribed an adequate dose of antiviral acyclovir which was 800mg 5X a day for 10 days - anything less than that will not help you. I have had several instances of double vision along with the last shingles attacks which has affected my left eye. It takes an experienced and caring doctor to deal with all of this. I have a standing refill for acyclovir and keep it on hand because it is necessary to start it immediately when you feel the tingling of an attack. I hope this helps somebody.
