Struggling with a house in upheaval

We are refinishing our family room and it is taking a long time.  I grew up in a house where every night everything got put away and everything looked nice.  I have severed my ties with my parents because I could not put up with the emotionall abuse anymore.  I am trying to learn a new way to live and not be so hard on myself when I do not get everything done.  My parents always finished a job even if it met working into the evening.  I am trying not to let the mess bother me.  I also learned this week that I need two complete knee replacements.  I have not been able to work around the house like I use too because of my knees.  The mess is bothering me big time and causing me big  anxiety.  It urts me to walk so I limit the amount of walking I do.  I am trying to distract myself and do little chunks of work around the house but I can't seem to focus.  I also have O.C.D. which is starting to flair up do to the anxiety.  Does anybody have any ideas?  I am on meds and I see a therapist.

What meds are you on? I have mild OCD and with my arthritis (that was brought on by my lyme\'s disease, I had a hard time getting anything done. Thank God my hubby helped pitch in! A messy house is hard to live with, but if you continue to tell yourself you are YOU...not your parents, then I think you will be ok with it, or at least a little better with it! Hard to let what our parents taught us out of our heads!
I no longer speak to my folks for the same reason as you and it has almost been 3 years! My only difference is...My mom was a neat freak, but neither of us girls took after her. LOL I was not messy by any means, just not a neat freak like mom! My father always made comment to us girls...\"God you surely didn\'t take after your mom did you?\" NOPE!
