Wow - I've come a long way baby! And thankfully my middle son is benefiting from it as well.
I was off from work today JM had asked if I would drive him to school (I needed the car) so that he didn't have to go in extra early with his dad. I knew he hasn't been sleeping well so I told him no problem.
On the way when I had asked him about his friend (who helped him with his paper because JM couldn't concentrate) and out of the blue ~ he told me that he was planning on going to an AA meeting with this friend. I was happy he felt comfortable enough to not only tell me but I had nothing to do with it. Well - maybe - kinda - in an indirect way. Maybe it was the seeds I planted a few times here and there? Like the Big Book by his bed, and maybe the gentle reminders that we love him and are here when he needs us. *His friend was in a rock band with him when they were in high school. His friend partied with him and now that I think of it ~ two days before going off to college J was arrested with him. Back then I didn't know how deep J was into it because I was over focused on T-Man. But I knew his friend was an alcoholic and received treatment just before T went into it himself.
Maybe it has to do with the counselor he had asked me to make an appointment for his depression due to his recent break up? * I gave the counselor a heads up when I made the appointment. Maybe the counselor suggested he go to AA? Or maybe it's just plain him. I don't know. All I know is that one meeting isn't going to be the end all but maybe it's a start?
Oh - and then today I get an email reply from our town juvenile detective. I had asked him if I could post lawn signs advertising our parent/student drug awareness/education program at our local middle school. He also asked me to call him about an issue he needs assistance with. What an imagination I have ~ what? Me? Help? Does it have to do with my sons? Is this some kind of sting operation? LOL Well - I am exaggerating but it was fun to imagine and a bit scary (flash back of him having me call him about my other son a few years back when he was an adolescent) but it turned out that our community family service organization might get the axe due to the budget. He had asked me (if and when the time comes) to speak up at a city counsel meeting to encourage the members to keep this program. Told him OF COURSE i will! After all they've been supportive and helped us with our parent programs! Hope it gets resolved because it feels like I'm always fighting city hall - figuratively speaking that is....
