Street Race with Tragic Ending....
April 8th,2007 was Easter.I had to work at Foxwood Resort Casino. My husband dropped me off at work.I hated the fact I had to work.So..the day ended at 5 at work, I came out of work to the most amazing surprise. My son Mike had come to pick me up with our family dog Rascal. That made my whole day and it was great having him drive me home from work.We had a family dinner and it was the best time of our lives. It will be one of my cherished memories. The next day I had to work,Mike Sr went off to work and Mike had gone to work at 6:36 a.m.. I had asked Mike to give Rascal a bath before I got home because he had a doctors appointment.I had spoke to Mike at 2 to see if he had done what I had asked,he had passed it to younger brother.I was upset because i don't ask for much from Mike or the other kids.I had got home at 5pm. Took the Rascal to the vet after I tried calling Mike but no answer which is out of character for him.Mike had seen his father but only briefly.Mike had taken off with a friend who he had not seen in awhile and never really hung out with.Mike Sr tried calling Mike but never from him.Mike Jr was suppose to hang with two different friends but decided to stay with this so called friend.I didn't have a good feeling all day and I was thinking of getting life insurance for the family that day.As the night went on,Mike's Dad went to bed,Dan was watching tv and I always stayed up until the kids came home. For some odd reason I didn't stay up,I was tired and went to bed before Mike came home.I said good night to Dan and told Dan I loved him.Jess lived on her own,not far from us.There was a knock on the door,Stonington P.D. wanting to speak to Mike & I .Dan came up and woke us up.He told us the cops were downstairs...was Mike home? Dan said no.We knew this would not be good.We came downstairs, and I had the worst feeling. The Police said Mike was in an accident and was taken to Backus Hospital. We never got dress so fast and I called Jess, she came over to go with us.The sad thing..Dan had drunk driving classes at school that day.The ride to the hospital was the longest ride--the hospital was 45 minutes from us.Just as we started heading to the hospital,my husband received a call from the Dr. at the hospital.Mr.Raffo--how far out are u? 35 minutes...we're sorry to say your son may not make it.Dead silence in the car for 5 minutes.Trying to grip what we just learned and how to process it.I couldn't drive faster,it seemed like forever to get to the hospital. When we arrived at the hospital,we were put in a room to wait for the doctor and nurse. Our hearts are in our stomachs and the not knowing. It seemed like forever before anyone came in to see us.Finally the Dr. and Nurse came. The Dr.said he did everything he could do to save Mike but it didn't work. His injuries were too much.I wanted to scream but couldn't.I was so numb with pain.to be continued......

Wow. Life is so tenuous. We just don\'t know what is in store for us. I am glad you have the wonderful memory of Easter 2007.
I can relate to the desire to scream. I was numb when Lisa was pronounced dead. I just couldn\'t think, let alone do anything.
Easter is a fragile time for you. Christmas is for me. Lisa died on December 1, 2009. She was so excited as she was going to come home for Christmas for the first time in several years. Her ticket was booked for the 10th.
This Easter was tough as it was Lisa\'s birthday yesterday.
I am babbling, but I just want you to know that I care, and I have some understanding of what you are feeling. People do not understand that grieving does not end overnight.
Love and hugs,
Marlene
so sorry about your son..... Nora
Such a tragic ending for your beloved son and I\'m so terribly sorry... Grateful that you have found us and can begin to share your narrative of your son and of your family. In the telling always comes some pockets of healing so I\'m hopeful that you will slowly feel that.
The companionship and sisterhood that is here is amazing and each of us seems to find this site just when we need to.
Gentle care as you bring up these memories and know that we will hold the space tenderly for you.
Loving care and knowing how deeply loved and sorely missed Mike is.
XO Joanie
Oh those terrifying moments of uncertainty...followed by the worst news ever...I know these feelings. So very sorry...Karen
I held my breath as I read this.....feeling it along with you.....
I too know that knock on the door. I too was asleep. There was no rush to the hospital for me....it was all over....right there in my living room, my life ended...
I\'m SO beyond sorry my friend.
