Storms of Woe 1
Chapter 1
I sat at the cove, watching the waves crash at the shore with my arms wrapped around my knees. The sky was a dull shade of gray, and any minute now the clouds could release a heavy rain. Out in the distance I could hear a single bird chirping. Then my moment of peace was interrupted by a blood-curdling scream that came from behind me. I turned to see a man, howling in pain, who limped toward me and seemed to reach his arm out for my help. He then collapsed to the ground, and the screams withered down to a low gurgling noise. I frantically ran to where his body was and knelt beside him. His body was twitching, and his neck was gushing blood all over. I managed rip off a strip of my shirt, using it as a bandage to wrap the wound. Before I was finished though, a strong voice spoke "Step aside." I then looked up to see a young man towering over me. His hair was a darker brown and his eyes were a dull gray.He held a sword, casually thrown across the brim of his shoulder. I was still knelt beside the man, then he repeated himself, this time in a more stern tone. "Step aside." I stood up and took a few steps backward. The boy held his sword with a firm grip, then swung it at the man lying below him. It hit directly at the neckline and his head rolled away from the body. A bit of the blood splattered on my shoes. “Why did you kill him....” I asked almost fainting because of all the blood around me. “To save you” the boy replied. “To save me! I was trying to save him” I screamed at him, then pointed my finger at the body, “You're a murderer!” He only shrugged his shoulders, and calmly replied “Maybe I am, but if it weren't for me, you'd be worse off than him.”I wanted to fight him, but I stopped myself --he was bigger, stronger, and he had a sword. So I ran, only hoping that he wouldn't follow me and he didn't. He stayed on the gloomy beach, growing smaller as I continued to flee.
I didn't stop until I reached my house. Leaning my back on the front door, I sat on the cold wooden floor and pulled out my phone. My vision was blurry with tears, but I managed to dial "911." "Hello? I'd like to report a murder." I gave the operator the location and descriptions of both the killer and the victim, and she said that an officer would be at my house soon to talk to me. I felt slightly relieved, and waited for the policeman's arrival. Hours passed, and the policeman still hadn't shown up. I constantly checked the windows and even walked outside every once and awhile but there was no sign of him. Curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to return to the beach. It was raining out, now, so I simply pulled up the hood of my jacket and walked quickly to the cove. It was completely empty except for the body, which I could have sworn was still slightly twitching.
When I turned around to return home, I bumped directly into the boy from before. "Come back to thank me?" he chuckled grimly. I pushed him away and stubbornly replied "I want nothing to do with you." “Oh, a fiery one we have, here," he said, and he smiled at me in a joking manner, which only infuriated me more. "What do you want with me?" I asked. "Me? Last I checked, you were the one who came crawling back here." "Just leave me alone," I grumbled, pulling up my hood and attempting to walk past him. He grabbed me by the wrist, stopping me in my tracks, and slyly said "You have no idea who has the power here, do you? You'll do as I say." Thunder struck, and I jumped a little bit in my skin. "What do you want me to do, then?" I asked. "You're going to run on home, go to sleep, and forget any of this ever happened," he ordered. "That's it? How can I just forget all of that?"A large bolt of lightning struck at the sea, uncomfortably close to me. The storm was getting bigger. "To hell if I know!" he retorted. Another bolt of lightning made contact with the earth. This time, I saw it catch a house, which soon burst into flames."Oh, no," I muttered, then became more frantic "No, no, no, no, NO!" The boy's grip on me loosened, and I ran at godspeed to the home, cringing when I realized it was my own. It was completely engulfed in the fire and to my surprise, the boy was standing beside me. He wrapped his arms around me, apparently trying to be comforting. I didn't have the willpower to fight him, I was too busy watching all that I knew burn, and I muttered "This is your fault."
"I can't control the weather." His voice was soft and soothing. It seemed like an eternity that I listened to the crackling embers and my own sobbing. By the time the rain put out the fire, there was nothing left but ash and scorched wood. Not knowing what else to do, I turned to him, and asked in a broken voice "Who was that man?" He remained silent, staring into the emptiness. "Did you hear me? I asked--" "I heard you," he cut me off sternly. "Come on," he said, loosening his grip around me, "Let's get you someplace dry." "What?" I asked, astounded by the sudden change of heart. "I'm sorry for what's about to happen next," he told me. He leaned his face in closer to yours, and let out a deep exhale. "Why'd you do that?" I asked, but then I realized the effects. Slowly, I was becoming drowsier, and I began to loose my senses. It wasn't long until I slipped into complete unconsciousness.
