Still can feel bad
Each time I feel as though anything my mother in law would say would not be felt and once again she says something that hurts. Sitting at the dinner table tonight we were talking about appreciating the things others do for us. I had just told Mom last night how I feel she is very generous with what she gives to others, specifically things like money to our son when he needs it, etc. I try real hard to compliment her if I feel she is doing things that are appreciated. So tonight we are talking about appreciation. She said how much she appreciates her son, Pat and all that he does for her like taking her to the doctor, getting her meds, ya da ya da. Of course I was waiting, the child, in me for her to say the same thing about me. But that was not the case. Guess I wish even now that she would just say one thing about me that is kind and nice. She cannot, she just cannot. I can remember before I got this new job in Feb of 2008 how many times I would take her shopping, even tho I hated taking her shopping because she would look at everything as I held her arm to keep her stable and not fall. I never shopped for me, I did it because I knew she would "appreciate? it???? When I first came here I would buy her goodies and cards to say how much I wish she was not in pain. Never once did I get a thank you, not once. I would take her for a ride out in the country so she could get out of the house, never once did I hear thanks Jeanette for your thoughtfulness. 4 years of being thoughtful and nice as I see it and nothing in return. It does not cost anything to say thank you.. And during those 4 years I would get demeaned, put down and treated as less than. Her son, my husband, never brought her cards, never brought her goodies in the first few years of living here. I am not saying I am all that, but what I do realize is that there is this basic feeling I have living here, that I am not as important as my son and husband. Is it that I am not blood?. Who knows, but I was hurt by her omission of not thanking me for the things I have done living here. I know she did not have a mom. Mom died when she was 9 years old. Maybe she does not know how to relate to a woman. Guess I could ask these questions til I am blue in the face and will never get the answer I would want. She can be very caring to other relatives in the family but cannot say any words that would comfort me and let me know I am cared for. Her apology when she goes off to me is "I hate when I get like this, like a few weeks ago. Okay that is her apology, but the words, I am sorry I treated you that way, would go so far with me. Deep down inside I know that is why I do not go out of my way now. I know and feel it will never be appreciated, and I will not get what I need. I know my intuition is right on target. Guess that is why I often isolate myself from her. I stay down in the basement and draw or on the computer on DS or doing something so I do not have to spend a lot of time with her. As my therapist said, that is a healthy thing to do. So I am healthy, but that does not take away what I yearn for. And yearning for something does not make it easy, it just makes me realize that I will never, ever get what I want, respect and appreciation. Guess this is a lesson in acceptance of who I am and that you cannot get what is not possible to get in someone who cannot give you it. She will never be that mother I have yearned for. She will never be that mother that would care for me as I want to be cared for. She will never be my expectation of what i think a woman should be. She did not get that in her childhood, so she does not know how to love in her adult life. Funny that i did not have any mother worth anything, and I can still feel, empathize, love and care and show I care. So in writing this I realize even tho I did not have good mother roles in my life, I did not follow suit with my own son. I do love him, feel for him when he is hurting, appreciate him for who he is and tell him how I feel about him. He will always know he is loved and cherished. Mom is missing out on so much in not being able to express herself in this way, but that is her issue, not mine. Can't teach an old dog new tricks. I am soooooooooooo grateful to the God I believe in that I can still love in spite of the lack of love in my childhood. And trust me when I say I will not go out of my way for my mother in law. She has shown me time and time again that I am not appreciated.

I am so sorry she is that way towards you its really not fair at all! You are such a kind person and try your hardest to please those around you and you dont deserve that treatment ever!! I wouldnt go out of my way for her anymore either she doesnt appreciate it anyways why not go out of the way and do something for yourself that makes you happy! You will get way more out of that then trying to do anything for her
Thank you for your support. Right now there are people upstairs who are relatives. I was looking thru their wedding album and saw my husband and his Mom\'s pic there, but I was not pictured there. Hmmm, it does hurt when you are not a part of the family, or at least I feel that way. Seems when this happens I want to isolate from the family. Not my husband but my mother in law and the relatives. Not that the relatives are not nice people, they are, but every pic I see I am separated from my mother and law and her son. One pic someone at work noticed that my husband was holding his Mom hand in the photo and I am holding his hand in the same photo. This is a family, at least my mother in law who has never been shown how to be warm, affectionate, and show love. Feels a lot like my childhood.
I know it hurts to feel like you arent part of the family. It does sound to me that they are excluding you and thats not right! I think once you start doing only for yourself they will realize just how much you do and care for them. If they dont then thats on them you are worth so much more and it makes me angry and sad for you the way they treat you
My heart is with you jeanette.I can relate and know how this feels.Married, and having to deal with in laws that dont have or sho any respect, affection, appreciation or love your way.And it makes it even more difficult when you all this happens in your home, where you live. Its a constant reminder living with your mother-in-law and her behaving and treating you this way.I agree that she has never had a loving mother in her childhood and she never took responsiblity for her healing and problems,so she doesnt know how to really relate and cherish you for who you are.Your strong and healthy and taking the best actions you need to do to take care of yourself. But i know it hurts,to have to stay away,to be left out,to not be included. Its almost sounds like she is feels the need to compete with you, that she is jealous of your loving and healthy relationship you have with your husband and your son,so she reacts and acts like she does.(((jeanette))I admire your loving stance, and I agree with you,I wouldnt go out of my way anymore for her.But i also feel i know you and I know that you will probably still do small nice things and actions for her.Its part of your spritualtiy.I have to deal with someone like her in my family as well, though i am lucky in that they dont live with us.I understand the hurt and the yearing. Its very difficult and a painful lesson to learn and put into practice. But your doing it.Your a better person and woman than she could ever imagine. She sees that but cannot act of love and kindness, only fear and jealousy. Her loss. You take care of yourself and little jeanetter.Love you my friend xo
Thank you for your support of and loving kindness in my latest journal jeanette. Meant so much to me.xo
Jeanette, your mother in law likely will never change, but I know and you know that you are a warm loving individual and nothing she can ever do or say will change that about you. I know how it hurts, because my family, my adoptive family, was the same way. I was never family with the exception of my father who died when I was 13 and my two aunts, who I barely ever saw. My husband, children, and I lived in my mom\'s basement for 5 years, taking care of her as she died from cancer. Even then, I was not accepted. When she died she did all she could to hurt us from beyond the grave, and cut me out of her will because I was not REALLY family. Not that I wanted her money, but recogniton of me as her daughter might have been nice.
Reciprocity. Wouldn\'t THAT be nice? This is the reality of our yearning. Man I can so relate. You are so good at focusing on what you want and what you have that\'s good. Accepting this is a normal blip in our training is important.
Why doesn\'t your hubby step up and say something to his mom about how he expects her to treat you? Does he ever come to your defense?
And isn\'t it strange how our very nature responds to our abusers by wanting more than they can ever give?
I, 4 1 appreciate the hell outta ya, girl.
Thank you all for your support. When I first started to live here my husband only once came to my defense. Mother in law was abusive to my husband and son but not as much with them because I was the one who was home all the time. I worked in a group home and was home during the day, so no one saw her at her worst. It got to a point where I was going to leave and live on my own. I would have done that, but my husband and i went into marriage counseling instead. I was honest with him about how hurt I was that he did not step up. What I also realized was that I did very well myself stepping up to the plate and confronting her with her behavior. I eventually did not need my husbands voice to defend me. To this day I don\'t need my husband to come to my defense. I realize he is in the middle of loving his mom and loving me. He need not choose between his mom and I. I observe both of their behaviors in this house and realize both of them have issues of their very own that have NOTHING to do with me. Both of them shut down when one is mad at the other, both will not talk for days to each other. That is not how I deal with conflict. I go to the source, talk about it, state my case and then if listened to try to work it out. Oftentimes both my husband and my mother in law do not have the skill to look inside and see their issues. My husband is getting better at this but has a way to go. What I realize is that I need to take care of me. I am no longer the person in this family who is taking care of everyones feelings and emotions and dysfunctions. It is a freedom that I truly enjoy today. Just as I have had to struggle to be whole and at peace with myself, I do not want to take away that opportunity with my family to not experience that same growth. I am not my mother in law, in fact I am the total opposite. Am I glad about that, why yes I am. I am open to growth, open to greiving my past and moving on.
So thank you all my friends for your input. Love you all in so many ways.
