I don't mind cool but hot and humid and wandering about isn't great. The awarded movie “A City of Sadness”, directed by the famous film director Hou Hsiao-hsien, was shot there.

They lie in the north-western part of the Phang Nga Bay, some 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the main land, amidst a group of a dozen of other islands. The island has a few caves and two sandy beaches, on the south western part and between the twin islands. The best view of the rocks and the bay is gained from a small path, which ascends steeply on the right of the beach at the place where the boats land. Numerous traders sell souvenirs on the beach and there are also some refreshment stalls.
I visited from Taichung but there are trips from Taipei. Tainan is a cool and delicious city, Kaohsiung is hot but slightly more boring but nice enough. Today we travel south and east to the Sun Moon Lake, the largest lake in Taiwan. The area around the lake is home to the one of the aboriginal tribes of Taiwan.
If travelling to Hualien, particularly to visit the gorge, do your homework and book your taxi before you go. Love how easy it was to sort out a sim card and data access – I'm able to use google maps on my phone, so I don't look like such a tourist. So far, Taiwan sort of feels like a mix between China and Japan, which works well for me because they are two countries that I love. The weather is ok – a little humid, but not hot. Gets a bit cold when everywhere is air conditioned. Fair amount of rain, but certainly bearable.
Capitalism, hard work and a natural entrepreneurial bent – and certainly not communism – has been responsible for improving China’s infrastructure and the livelihood of hundreds of millions of its citizens. As for democracy (Mínquán), Sun Yat-Sen believed in a western style of government by the people, anathema to the current regime in China. Getting out of the airport in a new car, driving on the right side of the road and without a GPS was a bit of a struggle but no incidents and we get to the Grand Hotel safely. Aptly named because this place is quite grand. Presidents, prime ministers, film stars and the magnificent have all stayed here. The last thing you want is for the end of your trip to be overshadowed by a sense of sadness about it coming to an end.

Juifen we did a different day by bus – up the mountain – and got heavy rain – which was very exciting on steep mountain road flooding with torrential flowing water. My Taiwanese partner just told me Pingxi is for the lanterns – but we did this at Shifen – so have not been to Pingxi.
