Stage 4 Cancer and Fenbendazole
A patient with advanced lung cancer reportedly experienced tumor regression after consuming oral fenbendazole, a medication that is normally prescribed as an antihelminthic. The woman bought and began taking the drug after receiving information about it from social media sites claiming that it was effective against cancer. Physicians should ask patients about social media cancer-related information and about the consumption of orally self-administered products, such as dietary supplements or herbs, to ensure that they are not being exposed to potentially harmful agents.
In cell culture experiments, fenbendazole (a helminthic drug) inhibited the growth of EMT6 cancer cells by binding to tubulin and disrupting the microtubule equilibrium. The ability of the drug to block tubulin polymerization explains its utility as an antihelminthic agent, but it also makes it an attractive target for cancer therapy because it may be toxic to cancer cells while not being detrimental to normal cells.
To test the effects of fenbendazole on the growth of EMT6 tumors, cells were treated for 2 or 24 h with increasing concentrations of the drug and then assayed for viability using a colony formation assay. Survivals were measured as both surviving fractions and yield-corrected surviving fractions, which account for differences in cell numbers between treated and untreated cells. The surviving data showed that fenbendazole significantly impaired the survival of cells, with a maximum reduction in survival of about 80%.
The effect of fenbendazole on cell growth was evaluated in the presence and absence of docetaxel, a taxane that is widely used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs in the treatment of cancer. Docetaxel caused a dose-dependent increase in toxicity of the EMT6 cells, but the effect was not altered by the addition of fenbendazole. Additivity was confirmed by isobologram analyses.
Clinically, a patient with stage 4 cancer may undergo genetic testing to determine whether he or she has a specific gene mutation that is associated with the disease. Then, a treatment plan can be developed that includes medications that specifically target the mutation, as well as chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
If the patient is experiencing symptoms, such as pain or fatigue, physicians should refer them to a palliative care clinic that can assist with managing these symptoms. Counseling can also be beneficial for a patient at this stage of the illness, as it can provide a space for a patient to discuss their feelings and emotions with a trained mental health professional. This counseling can be done either independently or with a loved one, and can help the patient find ways to cope and feel more comfortable during their diagnosis and treatment for stage 4 cancer. The palliative care team can work with the patient and their family to develop a plan that will best meet the patient’s needs. They can also refer the patient to specialized programs that focus on treating symptoms, such as pain, and can provide support for the patient and family during this difficult time.
