Some Good Things
So I was talking to my son last night about his school schedule. Some things need to change on it & some, perhaps not. He needs to talk to his guidance counselor today about it. Anyhow, it was a very adult-feeling conversation in that I listened to what he had to say, made appropriate suggestions & he actually listened to what I had to say (!) and explained his point of view. So I took the opportunity of this calm time to discuss the late-night homework situation thing.
He explained to me, basically, that he is trying to "figure out" the best approach to his homework & even said, "Expect it to be like this the next couple of days as I try to figure this out." Wow--I actually got a straight answer AND a proactive explanation!
Don't get me wrong--I'm fully aware that he may slip back into his bad not-doing-homework habit. But this was the first time he actually explained & did not argue about the whole thing.
Another good thing, at least for now. All this week, he has been on time for school. I suspect that knowing his sister is along for the ride & she's not going to be late because of him has something to do with it. Today he even stopped in the bathroom first & grabbed a poptart on the way out the door (before he would not eat anything). And yes, I'm commending him on his good choices!
Not only that, but I had to drive them in today (my husband had already left for work). It was actually a somewhat pleasant drive. Before, he'd be all crabby & mean & we'd be dead silent in the car. Today, we talked a little & the mood was comfortable. Maybe because my daughter was there? Whatever the reason, I'll take it!
