SNL is 40?

I just turned on the TV and saw the promos for SNL 40 year celebration....has it really been that long?  I remember many Saturday nights, sitting with friends waiting for the familiar sounds of the opening theme song.   "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" were the highlight of the night and we eagerly anticipated clever political satire and outrageous, push-the-edge-of-the-envelope skits commenting on current events.
Never has there been an ensemble as clever and witty as Belushi, Aykroyd, Murray, Radnor,  Curtin, Newman, Chase, and Morris.  There were stand-outs over the years, but none to match the first crew.  I never miss a chance to see re-runs of their shows as  they allow me to remember how simple life was.
