Sleepless in Denver

Monday, September 22, 2008 -- 7:55 PM I have not been sleeping well lately, and am beginning to feel the effects of sleep deprivation.  My mood has taken a downward turn, and I seriously doubt if many people would like to be around me.   Although there may be many reasons why I am having difficulty sleeping, I suspect that it has more to do with an upcoming family counseling session, as well as with difficulties I am having with some new voice activated software I am using named Dragon NaturallySpeaking, version 9.5.   This version of the software makes far more mistakes than the old version did.  In addition to that, it fails to recognize certain commands that are given. I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem, and I did not have that much hair to begin with.  Tonight I finally ran the audio setup again.  It seems to have helped with the problem.   Tonight I am going to put off discussing my upcoming family conference.  The mere thought of going to it seems to be stressing me out.  I will write more about this later in the week.   Tomorrow morning I am going to see my physical therapist.  I only got to see her for one day last week, and that did not include a pool session.  Since my back has been hurting me very badly throughout the weekend, I believe that she will use some traction on me tomorrow.  I am scheduled to have a pool session on Thursday.  I am hopeful that she will stick to the schedule.   Quotes for Determination:   “The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win.” -- Roger Bannister

I think you are correct in your assumption that your lack of sleep may be caused, at least in part, by the thought of the upcoming family therapy session.
Sure would do it for me.
I have the same anxiety about the upcoming trip with one son and his father to visit my other son and his new family.
Deep sigh. Family situations can be stressful.
I am doing the exact same thing. Distraction. Works pretty well.
Hope you technical problems are resolved soon.
Both of us will be on the other side of our sleepless nights at some point.

\"Tonight I am going to put off discussing my upcoming family conference. The mere thought of going to it seems to be stressing me out. I will write more about this later in the week.\"

And there\'s nothing wrong with that. Perfectly ok. Could you email like 3 points to your therapist that you know you\'ll want to talk about and then just forget about it until then? Would your therapist be ok with something like that? I don\'t think it would be avoidance... It would be putting in the queue and then GOING OUT AND LIVING IN THE MEANTIME. So by sending something now, you make the commitment. But give yourself some breathing room to go and do other things.

\"My mood has taken a downward turn, and I seriously doubt if many people would like to be around me.\"

Ah-HAH! You said \'mood\' and not \'life\' Good job!!!!! : D

Turn schmurn... I like being around you whenever.

I am supposed to compose a list of three questions I would like to ask my brother, when we get together for our family conference. Although I am supposed to have the questions ready when I see my social worker tomorrow morning, I have not done so. I have a few general ideas, so I am going to let my social worker help me refine them.

I\'m seeing my social worker in the morning, and my psychologist in the afternoon. That should be enough head shrinking for one day. After that, I will try and put all of those thoughts behind me for the next week or two. I will think of it as a vacation from reality.

You DID notice that I said \"mood,\" rather than \"life.\" I am trying to follow some suggestions by breaking down the things I say into smaller pieces. It is another small step.

Thanks for saying you like being around me, whenever. It would be nice if I could start feeling that way too.

Well, why don\'t you dig out some music a friend sent you and listen to that... Some King\'s Singers maybe?

Night night my friend... My shoulder is giving out.

Jim, this is a great task you are taking on. I can fully relate to the stress you must be feeling.

Perhaps the timing isn\'t right for this? If you feel you\'ve come too far to turn back then know that we are here for you to support you no matter what happens with the family counseling session. It can bring back all those frightening feelings. I would love for you to feel empowered going into this session but I\'m well aware of how familial instincts can overtake. I would have no trouble writing a letter to your sister and brother on your behalf, explaining to them why this is not a good time - if you should need it. Just say the word, friend.

I\'m glad to see you are taking a break and practicing self care.
