shunt side effects

This is Mr. MM3 again.  I have an update on MM3 and honestly we’re a bit stumped.  I’m hoping you folks can provide some guidance.  After surgery on Tuesday MM3 was doing much better.  Although in pain from her incisions it seemed her pressure was under control and her head pain had been reduced greatly.  We noticed some body ticks as she would fall asleep but we were told more than likely this was a side effect of the anesthesia and the surgery and this would dissipate over time.  After a few days these ticks had become worse.  They only appeared as she was falling asleep would start out mild, but after about 10 minutes her arms would flail or her body would jerk until she was awoken.  She described it as that sensation of falling as you drift off to sleep.  The lack of sleep and the high amounts of pain medications have made it very hard for her to focus.  She is almost constantly in a twilight state and jumps in an out of what’s really going on and things that are happening in her brief dreams.  We’ll be talking about how she’s feeling one moment and then just as quickly she’ll get very agitated about not turning in paperwork for a nonexistent fund raiser or the state of the kitchen at home when we’re 700 miles away.  I’ve dismissed this all to medication side effects.  Sunday we called the doctor to see if there was anything they could recommend to trying to reduce their frequency.  Lack of sleep is becoming a major issue.  They asked her to come in to perform some tests.  It was decided to reduce the amount of flow from her shunt since low pressure headaches seem to be common.  This morning the ticks and spasms have increased.  She scheduled to go back to the hospital for some CAT Scans and EKG’s.  Turning to you folks, have any of you heard of anything like this happening with shunt surgery? Could this just be medication side effects?  Thanks
