Shoreham Nudist Beach
For five years when I was in my 20s I lived near Shoreham Harbour, a few miles to the west of Brighton on the south coast of England. The harbour was constructed by stopping up the outlet of the River Adur and by constructing an artificial outlet for the river a few hundred yards to the west.
Shoreham (Portslade) - Beaches
The beach is just a few hundred yards of shingle, with sand at low tide. Industry mingles with the port facilities; residential areas and commerce of Portslade, Shoreham and Hove are on the other side of the harbour. There were no facilities on the beach - no footpath or cycleway, no toilets. The only access is via the harbour service road (Basin Road South) or by walking along the beach from neighbouring Hove Beach: and so it is very secluded. When I lived in the area, a high sea wall, since demolished, separated Basin Road South from the beach. There was a large, twin-towered power station, sometimes giving a distinctive scent to the beach. This has now been replaced. Unfortunately there is a sewage outfall not far away to the west resulting in detritus such as condoms, tampons, panty pads .... From the high water mark extending 50 yards or more down the beach are a series of wooden groynes to reduce the drift of sand from west to east, the direction of prevailing currents.
It was very permissive. Brighton is well-know as a meeting place for those who prefer their own sex. I was often approached for masturbation, mostly by men.
When living near Shoreham Beach, my job with the local authority involved visiting residents at home in connection with applications for planning permission. One warm summer day I visited a barrister who I had met a few days earlier on the beach. I thought it best not to acknowledge that I recognised him. In his back garden was a fair-haired young man getting an all-over sun tan; his male parts showed that he was enjoying it a great deal.
At the time I did not appreciate how lucky I was to live within a few hundred yards of such a liberal beach. Other beaches I have visited, especially in Germany, are much more restricted. There are self-appointed as well as official 'beach police' watching every move. (No sex please, we're nudists). If I had an erection I felt that I had to turn face downwards and keep my cheeks still so as not to look as though I was masturbating. I was bemused to find separate toilets for men and women, remembering that at Shoreham there were none at all; peeing was not something to hide. I found beaches in Scandinavia and France less restrictive about behaviour.
Part of the eastern end of Brighton beach is designated by the town council as clothes optional. I have not visited it as often as that to the west, partly because it was further from where I lived, partly because it was not as secluded and not quite so permissive. It is visible from the seafront promenade and other public areas. This might be the reason why many of the users retain some clothing; many ladies keep their bikini bottoms or panties on and many men their shorts. Many seemed to visit to watch rather than to participate. When I have visited it, I didn't see any of the intercourse freely encountered at Shoreham or even overt masturbation.
It is becoming acceptable to be naked in an increasing number of places. In the UK nudity in public is not illegal but it can become an offense if anyone complains and can prove upset and shock (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-33092812). Nudity is allowed on many beaches not officially designated by the relevant authority. In some countries, it is usual for ladies to wear nothing but a thong, G-string or their panties, even where there are many other bathers; in more remote parts of the beach, some wear nothing at all.
Many towns and cities have beaches where part is designated as 'clothes optional'. In the city where I live, some swimming pools have mixed nude sessions in the saunas. Some pools can be hired out of normal times for private use, usually 'costumes optional'.
I have many times taken all my clothes off when out for a walk in a remote area. For example, when I was living in Hove, one warm sunny day, I packed a few sandwiches and decided to go for a walk on the South Downs. As I left the built-up area I continued on a footpath. There was no-one else in sight, so I took my clothes off, put them in my shoulder bag, and continued. I was aroused by the exercise. I arrived at the crest of the Downs and looked down on the villages below. Legs apart, I relieved my irresistible urge.
Once when I was returning home from France, I decided to spend the day in Calais before catching a late ferry. It was a warm sunny day. I headed for the beach. Few ladies there covered their breasts. I became very horny as I walked away from the town centre to a more lonely part of the beach. It was near low tide: the beach was very wide, with hardly anyone in sight. I took my clothes off and continued along the beach. Two young women in thongs appeared some distance away. A mature lady then appeared, wearing only her white panties. She walked towards me. She looked down at my erection and took off her panties ...
In some countries, female nudity is allowed in public places. It has to be remembered that the ladies in these films would be protected by a film crew:
