She strikes again!!
Let me start by saying my Mother-in-law is a stereotypical mother-in-law. I describe her to people as the Mom in “Everybody loves Raymond” only she’s worse!!! So after being married for 32 years and dealing with her for that long how is it possible that she can still hurt me.
Just to give you some idea:
Randy was in the hospital last year during our anniversary. So his mother insisted on keeping our anniversary card till we were home together to open it. Of course Randy never made it home to get this card, so after he passed and the first time I saw my mother-in-law the first thing she did was hand me my anniversary card. I couldn’t even open it! My son took it from me and said don’t worry Mom you don’t have to open this or ever see it again!
This was just a recent strike from her. After 32 years I would need lots more room on this site to list all of the different strikes from my mother-in-law.
So for Easter she was kind enough to send me and her other children a check. The only problem was that for me it was made out to me in my maiden name. Randy’s only been gone 6 months. Didn’t take too long to write me outta the family!!! I was married at a young age so for most of my life I haven’t used my maiden name. I guess in her mind I’ve never been part of the family. I know she never approved of me, I guess no one is ever good enough for your baby, but after 32 years and 3 kids and 1 grandkid, I really thought I was in!

Dawn....unbelievable and oh so hurtful to you. I am sorry that you have had to deal with this mother-in-law for 32 years...what a nightmare she must be. The maiden name thing is just awful. It would take me a while to get over that one.
I guess you should just consider the source and be thankful that Randy turned out so normal. Hugs to you....Nancy
I absolutely see how these could both really hurt. But I have to say that I\'m interpreting more as her being completely ditzy (maybe I\'m projecting my own ex-MIL on her too much and being too charitable) than malicious. She just wanted to make sure to give you that card, never mind that it stabbed you right in the heart, she\'d been holding it all this time.
As for the use of your maiden name, that might be how she thinks of you even after all these years (!!!). Hello, you took his name, she could have caught on by now, but maybe that\'s how she thinks of you. I really don\'t believe she was deliberately trying to strip you of your membership in the family. But it\'s absolutely a slap in the face - like you\'re a second-class citizen of some kind.
In some small way, I know how you must have felt. Craig\'s ex-wife sent me a sympathy card after he died. It was really such a generous gesture, since she said that the few times they\'d talked through the years, she could tell how thrilled and proud he was to be married to me. The only fly in the ointment was where she addressed it to me by my previous name. I don\'t even know where she got that name! Certainly whenever we had to send her something, my name was right there with his and the same last name. Oh, well.
Good Grief! She sounds like my ex-Mother-In-Law. We called her the Sargent-Major! She was brutal and think yours is worse! Cash the cheque and treat yourself to something nice. Your son is right...you never have to see that anniversary card ( or her for that matter ) ever again. Take care of you, Cindy xxoo
Wow... Sooooo speechless.
My mother in law was, admittedly, losing her grip but when I visited her after Darryl\'s death she asked if I had married again yet. He had only been gone three months and all she could do was go on about me marrying. Giving a cheque in your maiden name is something else again. I would be very offended and might challenge her to know exactly what she means by doing something like this. Too many women get away with this kind of crap. I mean! What is the worst that can happen? You never speak again! And that is the good news :-)
Thank you all for your support and thanks for making me feel better knowing I wasn\'t the only one with a witch of a MIL.
I am just so sorry. This kind of behavior is childish and heartless. I agree - take that check and enjoy it.
