Security Guard Job Sucks
They had me working at a gate-house last night, and I was under the impression that I am to flip the switch that opens and closes the gate up and then back down, to close the gate after each car goes through; otherwise, all the cars would just blow on through, and then, what's the point of me (security) being there?
Apparently, "I" closed the gate on a woman's car last night. Or, should I say, the gate closes automatically, and I had no idea of knowing how long the gate would remain open, whether she was too closely following the car in front of her, etc. She went and complained, and now they're probably going to have to deduct the amount to fix a scratch on her car door from my next paycheck, which, I suppose, they rightly should.
There's got to be a better way to make a buck. This is low pay and high liability. I hope the fucking economy begins to surge back soon. I'm already in another good business, wedding videography, but that business has been scarce, because nobody's got any money, because so many people are out of work, or are working for a fraction of their previous wages, because businesses don't want to invest, because businesses don't know what their taxes will be next year, because the government doesn't know how much money they will need, because the government is spending way out of control. This sucks.

I would question policy and procedure manual that describes the operation of the gate. Is there a policy in place? Did someone sign you off on security training ? Who showed you how to operate the gate ?
Don\'t put the blame on yourself this easily. If there is no policy and procedure you clearly did nothing wrong. Maybe this incident should serve as an examples why procedure descriptions exist.
Thanks! Training was minimal, didn\'t cover the time it takes for the gate to close, and this is one of many, many places they have me guarding. I didn\'t want to work for them full-time because I wanted a flexible schedule to allow for free-lance video work, which pays SOOO much better, and pops up any day of the week, so they complied. \"Floating\" from post to post, relieving people when they need vacations, is thus my only option. Hadn\'t worked at that place for a month, so it was all a little fresh again.
Oddly enough, Aronia, as SOON as I wrote this, not 30 seconds later, the phone rang, with 2 wedding bookings this weekend and an inquiry for January! I must\'ve put it out into the universe! Ask and ye shall receive...
