second dr appt
So I got in the exam room and the nurse took the bandages off and I wanted to pass out. The swelling is alot worse then it was on friday when wifey changed my bandages. The top of my thumb is swelled so bad, the skin has pulled away from the underlying tissue which can be seen under the nail where the pain is the absolute worse.
So the Trauma dr comes into the room and says "Oh it looks good! No sign of infection. I need to take an x-ray" So he changed his mind and said he was going to wait another week before he takes out the stitches. :(
So he shows me the x-ray and it didn't really look too good to me. He said he did the best he good at putting the pieces back together. He said, you have to understand that it was a complex injury because of the angle of the saw blade and it shattered both bones at the joint so there are still alot of little pieces floating around on the inside but he can't do anything about them now until the soft tissue completely heals. Then he will do more surgery, clean it out, cut the ends off, and stick a piece of bone in place of where the joint would be to fuse the 2 bones together.
As a result, I will never be able to bend it at the joint, ever again and I told him I just need to be able to hold a guitar pick and he promised me, I will be able to do that :)

Ouch! Every time I read your journals, I get a twinge of pain running through me!! That is really great news about being able to play guitar again one day. I know how important that is to you. So, like you said......Yay!! :D I\'m really happy for you!
I am so happy for you! It\'s amazing how things need to look worse before they look better isn\'t it? I broke my ankle and I have so many rods and pins in my body now the XRay looks like a bad carpentry job. I call it Frankincankle LOL... Get well my friend.
You have priorities and the dr. has said you will be able to play your guitar. I know a lady who was hitching up her trailer to her truck and it was dark and the trailer dropped down on her finger and she had to pull the finger out from under the trailer. She lost half that finger but she can still hold the reins to ride her horse in a hunter jumper class.
I have a bum ankle and all I asked was will I be able to ride my horse again. Yep, I\'m riding.
That thumb will heal and you will play the guitar and life will be good for you again. You recognize and know what is really important to you.
I might just have to send you a pick just as an insentive!!!!!

Hallelujah for good news on your thumb and your guitar playing! Next week when the stitches come out I bet it will look a lot better to you!
You know the old expression, \"It\'s always darkest before the dawn\"? well, in this case, it\'s always more grotesque as it heals! So you can FEEL it and you still hold a guitar pic. Considering the horror and pain of this \"accident\", I think this is very good news. AND you have a whopper of a story to tell.
