[Sat.5/26/12] is it a choice or a disease

bhamguy...
all i can say at this point is I agree with you.  I have been fighting this 'disease' with my husband for the last seven years ALONE!  And the only thing it has ended with is with my failure and his continued disease.   And NOW, I am left feeling the same way.  I have failed at everthing I set out do 4 years ago and now all I can say is
I AM SICK!
I don't believe that addiction is a disease;  I found a book but didn't have the money to buy it that was called Addiction IS a choice.   The word goes back to about 400 BC...and its original use was a CHOICE!
I was taught early in life, that addiction was a disease. and I accepted it. But after seeing the destructive forces of addiction through those close to me and those whom I love the most, I rational mind clearly shows that it is not a disease and cannot be treated like disease. How can 1 person have a disease and that disease negatively affect everyone in relationship with that one person?
Does drug or alcohol alter the brains wiring resulting in some type of mental illness? YES! it does...why? because people make a choice to introduce a foreign substance into their body that makes them feel good!  And after doing that for so many years of course the brain is rewired. but the mental illness/disease is a consequence of the addiction.  the addiction itself is a choice.
Ya want proof? Ok my husband is addict and does all the things addicts do right? So for the last 7 years I've been doing everything I can help him.   And I've been trying to learn as much as I can about addiction and this disease that he has. Well last month I had several crashing blows that didn't all even come from him. but have landed me in what I can only assume is an ADDICTIVE state. Now, was I taking brain altering drugs or alcohol to "feel good"? No, I was only trying to help myself while continuing to support him.  towards the end, I did find myself turning more and more to alcohol but I caught my self making a very bad CHOICE.   I can drink in control. I know how alcohol affects me and others.  I did afterall learn all about ADDICTION the disease before remember.
OK. I think I need to stop here.
Just remember, I am sick, too.   I'm not an addict and I don't have a disease. But I am sick.   And if addiction is a disease, then it's more like an epidemic of choice.  Because everyone I know has this damn disease, and it's way worse than the top killer diseases of this world.
