There’s not much worse than getting excited for a camping trip full of fun and then realizing you can’t get there because you didn’t plan appropriately. Coming into Silverton from Durango is a challenge in itself with the many switchbacks and mountain passes, but coming into Silverton from Ouray involves driving over this infamous Million Dollar Highway. It is notorious for its 25 miles of hairpin curves, steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and lack of guardrails.

This campground has many sites that are screened well with trees. It is located adjacent to the Little Squaw Resort. Fishing is possible on the Rio Grande River, Squaw Creek, Weminuche Creek and Rio Grande Reservoir (2.3 miles to lower end). There is trail access to the Continental Divide and Weminuche Wilderness, via Weminuche Creek Trail 818 and Squaw Creek Trail 814. In 1874 a Brewster Stage Line swing station was located here. This is a popular campground which remains full from mid-June through August.
It is close to whitewater rafting adventures as well as Mesa Verde National Park and all the outdoor recreation opportunities available there. Durango KOA also has planned activities for children. San Juan National Forest, with its outdoor recreation areas, is just steps away.
