Take the Prater Ridge Trail for a 7.8-mile round-trip following a loop around the ridge or the two-mile Knife Edge Trail, which heads towards the Montezuma Valley Overlook. Junction Creek campground is five miles west of Durango and near the beginning of the Colorado Trail, a 469-mile trail between Denver and Durango.
A trip to Mesa Verde is most likely on everyone’s bucket list. The park is located near Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest body of water in Colorado, so fishing and boating are definitely an option. Gunnison is home to the Gunnison Valley Observatory and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
The campground is set amidst majestic Ponderosa Pines on the shore of the rushing Animas River and features dramatic mountain views. This campground is also nicely landscaped, clean, and park-like. The scenery around the park and along highway US-550 is simply spectacular. Pitch a tent, sleep in your RV, or rent one of their authentic old-west log cabins. Should you wish to stay and relax in the campground, there is a pool, hot tub, and sauna. This camping resort will not disappoint you.
There’s not much worse than getting excited for a camping trip full of fun and then realizing you can’t get there because you didn’t plan appropriately. Coming into Silverton from Durango is a challenge in itself with the many switchbacks and mountain passes, but coming into Silverton from Ouray involves driving over this infamous Million Dollar Highway. It is notorious for its 25 miles of hairpin curves, steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and lack of guardrails.
Enjoy amazing views of Lake Granby from this campground. Loop A has electric sites fitting for RVs of up to 30 feet. Just a short walk from the Ranger Lakes fishing areas, this small state forest campground boasts 31 electric sites and two trailheads accessible from the campground.

Fishing is possible on the Rio Grande River, Squaw Creek, Weminuche Creek and Rio Grande Reservoir (2.3 miles to lower end). There is trail access to the Continental Divide and Weminuche Wilderness, via Weminuche Creek Trail 818 and Squaw Creek Trail 814. In 1874 a Brewster Stage Line swing station was located here. This is a popular campground which remains full from mid-June through August.
It is close to whitewater rafting adventures as well as Mesa Verde National Park and all the outdoor recreation opportunities available there. Durango KOA also has planned activities for children. San Juan National Forest, with its outdoor recreation areas, is just steps away.
Years ago as is the case today, settlers of the area enjoyed a thriving wildlife ecosystem and fertile soil, and newer city dwellers came to take advantage of the regions gold and economic viability. We're a great home base for visiting all of the great area attractions around Silverton, CO, including the famous Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Kendall Mountain Recreation Area. You can also enjoy day trips to Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Mesa Verde National Parks. Durango KOA has a panoramic view of the San Juan Mountains and is shaded by pine trees.
