The way you behave during an encouner is, to some extent, governed by the species of bear that you are inter-acting with. This medieval city also makes the perfect gateway to discover all the treasures of Transylvania. Tour the famous castles, churches, and other charming cities of the region.
A superb trip with a great hotel, lovely staff and a fabulous tour guide. Probably worth adding that the Romanian people are certainly friendly / welcoming. Stating the obvious, the people on the trip really do help to make it.
Romania has a temperate continental climate characterised by hot summers with potential heavy storms, and cold winters. June is a good time to visit as the temperatures should be more pleasant, varying between 15-30C - although in the higher mountainous regions it can still sometimes plummet to 1C at times. Early morning and night times will be colder so you should pack some warm clothing. There are thirty-five rooms equipped with en suite bathrooms, a minibar, a television and internet. The large restaurant serves traditional or international cuisine, but make sure you try the food from the Székely region, delicious cuisine from a subgroup of Hungarian people living in Romania. Enjoy a mountain escape within the Carpathian Mountains at the Casa cu Cerbi, an authentic farmhouse on a real Bucovina farm.
No specific skills or experience are required for you to join the project, but we do ask that you arrive with a willingness to get involved and a passion for wildlife conservation. When the darkness falls and visibility becomes a challenge, you’ll hike out of the forest for your transfer back to Brasov. Please be aware that as you will be walking through the forest at night, listening to your wildlife guide's directions is important for your safety. Even today Sighisoara is still filled with the clip-clop of working horses’ hooves pulling carts, thick red tassels at their temples to ward off flies and the evil eye. In the near-40 miles from Apos I realise we had hardly touched a tarmac road.
Today you will be free to delve into the hidden treasures of Brasov’s charming Old Town, at your own pace. Discover Strada Sforii one of the narrowest streets in the city and allegedly one of the narrowest in Europe, located near Șchei Gate. Includes 2 nights on a half board basis, 5 nights on a bed and breakfast transylvania trips basis. All our tours are priced on a land-only basis, giving you maximum flexibility when deciding how to get to and from your tour. Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional.
Visiting the sanctuary allows you to see first-hand the incredible work they do to give the bears a better life. Brown bears can usually only live up to years in the wild, but one of the bears at the sanctuary lived until he was 42 – a testament to the incredible work done there. You can get to the top either by walking or taking a cable car. There are a number of different walking trails leading through the forest to the top of the mountain.
If you’re not digging on the Romanian wines, there are lots of other options. Staff is knowledgeable and will help pair wines to match your taste. In the summer, enjoy a glass of wine on the makeshift terrace on the darling street. Walkers' Britain is committed to responsible travel and true sustainability. We take travellers to many countries which are home to challenging wilderness, rich biodiversity, and fragile environments. It is the travel choices we make while visiting these environments that reduce the negative impact.
The country’s national dish is samarle – fat, savoury parcels made by wrapping spiced pork and rice in cabbage leaves. The resulting rolls are then baked in the oven with tomato juice and bacon. Samarle is almost always served with mămăligă, a polenta-like porridge made from yellow corn. Mititei, a meat dish consisting of spiced grilled ground meat rolls is also popular, and usually served with French fries and murături , while Tochitură is a thick pork stew topped with a fried egg. Most meals will start with a soup – often a vinegary ciorbă – with a red or green chilli on the side, and you’ll find a wide range of salads on offer almost everywhere. Romanian cuisine is heavily influenced by the various cultures that have played a part in its past.
The coastal lagoons and marshlands hosted a huge variety of water birds along with many migrants giving sensational birdwatching opportunities. The tour group consisted of 14 birders of diverse experience, eight staying for the tour duration and six returning home after ten days. Our principal aim was to see the famous Brown Bears of Transylvania along with many species of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, reptiles and amphibians.
The scenery, people and more easily spotted flora and fauna made this trip excellent. The carpathian mountains were beautiful Early June was exceptionally hot and sunny. The walks were sometimes steep up or down knee length grass. When you go to the bear hide you cannot use a camera that has a focusing light as it will disturb the bears. We couldn't work out how to turn ours off so we just had to use our i-pad which wasn't really up to the job given the fading evening light. So if you can work out how to turn it off in advance that would be handy, or take an SLR.
As the need arose, the church was expanded and fortified over the intervening centuries to include towers and defensive walls that were still being added to until the end of the 18th century. Blacker was keen to try to preserve something of this way of life during his time here and set aside time and money to try to renovate some of the old houses. It’s interesting to note that Prince Charles has followed a similar path, purchasing two old Saxon homes and having them restored to their former glory for the benefit of visitors to the area. We explore Cluj this morning, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. We then depart Cluj, travelling through the Carpathian Mountains and via the Tihuta mountain pass.
I personally recommend actually staying in Sighisoara for a couple of nights to properly soak up the atmosphere, but you can easily see all of the main sights in an afternoon. Now the practice is thankfully illegal, but there are hundreds of traumatised bears that cannot survive in the wild and thus depend on the various bear sanctuaries to look after them. There is a cruel history of cruelty towards bears in the Balkans. Brasov’s medieval old town is beautifully preserved, and even if you’re not an architecture buff, you can’t fail to be impressed by the stunning buildings and cobblestone streets. Although Bran Castle is super touristy, and it isn’t considered one of Romania’s ‘best’ castles by a long shot, but if you’re a sucker (see what I did there?) for vampire lore, you have to pay Bran Castle a visit. They provide luggage storage, so it’s easy to go off and discover the Transylvania Region with ease.
