Revelation After 6 Years

On Tuesday, I had a really good talk with my son after dinner. It kind of started out talking about his birthday (which happens to be today), and morphed into talking about being an adult, and finally became about why exactly he's been angry these past 6 years & how he feels about it all.
Long story short, he told me about how some of his recent outbursts (like when he was at school & toward us) made him feel really bad--like he'd regressed to the child he was back in elementary school. Specifically, how he felt when he was bullied: small & powerless. (I'm thinking the anger is his way of trying to take back power?) Anyhow, he said that it "broke his heart" knowing that he hurt us, and even though we've told him that we forgave him, he still doesn't "feel" forgiven on the inside. When he gets angry & then the dust clears, it seems like he's mad at himself for losing his temper. He feels that he's "not worthy" to be an adult. (I suspect that this feeling of unworthiness is exactly what is keeping him from moving forward.)
I'm not sure if this all makes sense, the way I'm explaining it. But to me, it felt like he's FINALLY communicated what was in his heart. He even said that--back when he was a young teen, he just didn't know how to put all these feelings into words. But now he is. I feel like, for the first time since he was 14, I finally understand him.
Will anything change? Who knows? I hope that, by talking to me about all this, it may be a breakthrough for him. Or at least the beginning of one. At the very least, how I treat him or react to him will be based on a greater understanding, and maybe the cycle can change.
