Retirement
I've been thinking about my retirement. Both of my sisters are happy I'm doing it, saying it's about time. But I'm not too sure. My work has been my life. I've been identified by my job whether it was a radio d.j., radio newsman and news director,,manager of a food establishment, Dairy Queen, Pizza Inn, Pizza Hut, Metro Diner, or Sambo's,,,air controller at a t.v. station,,,or customer service rep in a call center. All of them were challenging, interesting jobs. My weeks were set up by my work schedule and made for some interesting hours with odd days off. Work was the reason I got up in the morning or in the night. It was who I was and it was fun explaining what I did. But, what about retirement? When I meet someone, who will I say I am? Just another one of those who has finished their time in the workforce and now has nothing to do. I asked my landlord a few months ago what I could look forward to when I retired. He said whatever I did on weekends, I would do all week. That didn't sound so great since I do most of my house cleaning and laundry on the weekends. Seven days of that didn't seem that interesting and challenging and I've gotten a dose of that since I've out of work, cleaning the house here and there during the week. I have found a challenge though. While mowing the back yard this morning, I noticed a bunch of dead tree limbs and branches that need to gathered and taken to the trash. It'll be a lot of work and take a good while since I've been putting them in a couple of corners of the back yard creating fire hazards. And, I can take down the short fence at the back of the yard since 2 small dogs have replaced the pit bulls in the yard behind me and Foxy loves them and they her. So what else about retirement? Well, I won't have to worry about weekends since the whole week will be a weekend and I won't have certain days to do certain things. I'll keep Sunday as laundry day since nobody's there when I get there and I like it that way. Grocery shopping may stay on Saturday since my body refuses to let me sleep passed 3AM. Hope my doctor doesn't change. He practices at the county clinic so I hope I can still go there with medicare. I really like him. Maybe, I'll be able to get better meds and maybe afford to go to Walgreens instead of Walmart. I love that they're 24 hours and 5 minutes away instead of 10-15 minutes away and open at 9AM and close at 10PM. Money will still be a problem since my benefits won't be that much more than I'm getting now. Food will be much the same. Steak won't be on the menu, but it hasn't been for years. Just can't see paying $5 or $6 for meat for one meal. Besides, I like what I'm eating now, but need to get back to healthier foods. Maybe fishing will come back into my life. That'd be great. If gas goes down, maybe I can visit Vickie more. I've missed the times I've fished with her. Foxy will probably disown me for bugging her so much. She's getting tired of me since I've had so much time off. It's just hard to keep my hands off of her since I love her so much. As I've been writing this, I haven't come up with anything great about retirement. Hope I can think of something else to do.
