Why are respiratory clinical studies so vital and pertinent? With today's growing technologies, machineries, and fast-paced world, our air and general environment are not exactly getting any healthier or cleaner. There are a number of things that affect our respiratory system in a negative way, causing complications, that can actually be remedied by advances in medical research and the creation of medical devices. Back to the quality of air, the prevalence of many respiratory diseases and illnesses like COPD and asthma that are becoming more common nowadays. Respiratory disease affects millions of people across the globe, with chronic lower respiratory diseases having the fourth highest mortality rate in the U.S. alone. Oftentimes, these are conditions that affect people of any age group and any ethnicity. Many U.S. Americans are suffering from asthma (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/asthma), a serious chronic lung disease caused by continual airway inflammation punctuated by episodes or attacks of increased inflammation, often in response to specific triggers. These attacks are characterized by having trouble breathing, which occasionally are extreme and can become a medical emergency. Over the period of 1980 through 1996, the prevalence of asthma in the US has increased. Although the prevalence has seen a bit of a standstill in 2001, it now seems that these respiratory diseases are back on the increase. This is why respiratory clinical studies and participating in clinical research study is so important. The more respiratory clinical studies are being done, the quicker we can get results and new, innovative ways to treat and cure such diseases. However, many clinical research studies suffer from a lack of participation, and are thus never fully carried out. Most of this lack of participation is due to the fact that awareness about clinical research, how to get involved, and what is entailed are mostly unknown to the general public. Therefore, it is important that potential study volunteers be educated about clinical research in general and the avenues for participation.It is especially important because these respiratory diseases are mostly common in young children so many contract research organizations that do pediatric clinical studies also do respiratory clinical studies. Just like pediatric clinical study, respiratory clinical studies are done with the most up to date technologies as well as the best safety guidelines in the clinical research industry. Respiratory clinical studies can be challenging due to the nature of the tests. Patients have labor-intensive breathing that raises variability from the very beginning, but their performance is vital to producing accurate results.
