Resolutions Older Adults Should Make for Healthy Living

It’s been quite some time since the New Year began (and what a terrible year it’s been!), but it’s never too late to make a New Year’s resolution, right? In light of the fact that the world is dealing with a terrible virus, healthy living is on everyone’s mind.

For older adults, living a healthy life is non-negotiable—since they’re the most physically vulnerable members of society.

Here’s what you can do to take care of yourself.

Eating Healthier

Over time, your body undergoes fundamental changes. Your bodily needs change as a result, and your energy levels decrease. This means that you need to make changes accordingly.

You should be aiming to consume fewer calories than you used to, for instance. Fish, fruits, vegetables, and other low-fat foods are a must. Whole grain and nuts, a good amount of water—you get the drill.

At the same time, avoid fatty foods in general. Lean meat is the way to go.

Remember, you are what you eat!

Supplements

Like we said, your body’s changing, and it has a greater need for nutrients you were once never worried about as a result.

Adding sources of Vitamin C and D, etc., multivitamins, and dietary supplements will ensure that your body can heal effectively. It’s important to consult a nutritionist or a health provider, however, for a thorough evaluation of what your body lacks and needs.

Don’t Give Up on Activity

Diseases such as heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes, etc. may make you believe that your life has come to a standstill—but that doesn’t have to be true. See a physician or talk to someone from a senior care facility, but do not give up your daily activities.

However little, spend some time on physical activity on a daily basis. It keeps your blood circulating, and has a direct correlation with health.

There’s a reason people say exercise extends your lifespan!

Coping with Expensive Healthcare

It comes as a surprise to no one that the United States has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world. Humira prescriptions, for instance, cost $2,669 on average in the U.S. In the U.K., this number is $1,362. In Sweden, the same prescriptions cost just $822.

Even for people with health insurance—which most of us are wise enough to get—things aren’t easy. The coronavirus pandemic has made all of this clear.

In light of the rising rates of healthcare procedures, older adults, in particular, are forced to think about whether or not they can afford healthcare. Since old age brings illness and disease with it, it’s even more imperative that older adults think about this. Too many people suffer from a terminal illness or a life-threatening disease and lack the funds to deal with it.

In such times, older adults do have an option—but it’s one they often know little about.

And that is…
