regrouping
I think I may have opened a can of worms by posting something recently on the Gay Challenges group. It was about the controversy of whether or not being gay is a gift from God. Most seemed to think it was a curse, although some conceded I made a few good points about the heightened sensitivity and compassion most gays seem to have. However, it seemed to take a negative turn when I, perhaps unwisely, made the point that I think many gay people (not all) seem to live a kind of self-destructive lifestyle of partying and drugs and promiscuity and as a result end up full of self-loathing. And the gay world can be amazingly shallow. Perhaps I was too moralistic and preachy, which I do have a tendency to be. Judgmental. I get that from my parents, who are devout, strict Catholics, albeit with some compassion. Well, this one poster quibbled with my points and said that I shouldn't pressure others into choices that might not be right for them and that to dismiss the gay world as superficial closes you off. That's true (especially the second point, although I still don't see how anyone can see the dominant tenor in the gay world as anything but sad and superficial), but I still don't think there's anything intrinsically good about promiscuity. I just don't see how sleeping with many people can bring the satisfaction of one special person. Love seems to me to be a very private, special thing and when you're spreading it around among a lot of people it just seems to be diluting it, to be devaluing it. Anyways, move on. Next topic. Sometimes I overthink things.
