Recap of Saturday's cross-training - 7 Days Until Race Day
Yesterday's workout: 60 minutes of cross training via hiking!
I took a little break from DailyStrength yesterday because I was over in Berkeley and San Francisco for the day! We decided to go on a little spontaneous mini-roadtrip up north, which means... I didn't go bike riding as my cross-training. I went HIKING!
UC Berkeley is my alma mater, and there is a fire trail behind Memorial Stadium that I used to trek when I was going to college there. It was so amazing to be there again, surrounded by nothing but trees and trail, and walk the paths that I hadn't walked in years.
There are two things you should know about this trail. One: about a mile in, there is a very steep hill that really kicks your butt! I would never ever let myself walk it, yesterday included. I ran up this hill, albeit slowly and steadily, and was breathing really hard by the time I got to the top. It's so steep! The pictures don't do it justice. Here's a pic of the bottom:
And of me at the top! :)
Two: Two miles in, there is a gorgeous gorgeous vista, which is what makes the climb absolutely worth everything. I think the last time I was here, it was the last few days of college and my girlfriends and I hiked up here and had a small picnic at this vista point. Sigh... memories...
I also visited Skates on the Bay, a very nice restaurant right on the water. I'll talk about that in a different journal entry, but I got some nice iPhone photos of the views there as well.
Today's workout: 5.5 mile long run. Later I'll be writing a journal entry on how my long run went. There is a big hill involved, similar to the one I'll be encountering at the race, so cross your fingers for me that I'll make it up!!

The scenic runs always gave me the best memories. tc
That sounds like it was so much fun! Love the pictures!!
Great views! Hills are hard, but reaching the summit and seeing those views....Thanks for sharing!
great pics of you on your hike. Definite good cross training workout. I know all about running up hills. Its almost like you have to switch gears and run slower. I use to count in my mind, look down at the road. I could never run the whole way up a hill so I would use that as a walking section of a run. I would try and run 1/2 the hill at the very most. If you can run the whole way up, all power to you girlfriend. You rock!!
@tikasiamese No shame in walking! I don\'t think people realize how hard it is to WALK up a steep hill!
I\'m glad everyone likes the photos. They really don\'t do the scenery justice. I know I am lucky to live near these hills, and I hope everyone can have a chance to at least visit places like this in their lifetime. It\'s very much a retreat setting that makes you feel more at ease with the world. Consider visiting the mountains during your next break!
