Reality

Sure T is doing "better" - he seems to be engaged in school for the first time since - I think - ever!  He tells us he's received some A's in his last few projects, he talks about school, he wants to continue to improve. All good and I know I should just leave it at that.  But I am his mom and I still, of course, care and love him and know that he's not "out of the woods", so to speak.
He's home from school break and didn't come home last night (with a "major" using old using friend of his).  When T came home from break he left his backpack in the floor. Old habits die hard sometimes so - I look through it.  I find a pot pipe.  No surprise - I wasn't born yesterday and know that he's not sober but the reality of seeing the "evidence" ......... no explanation needed.  So - I told him what I found and he admits that he uses it but not for smoking pot. Says that if he were tested for pot - no THC would be found in his system. Says he uses the pipe for the leftover tobacco he has from smoked cigarettes when he can't get any. Okay - but he admits he drinks and that's okay I guess (not).  Whatever.
So later I find a small empty plastic bottle with top in his pant pocket.  Not sure what that's about but ~ I'm not even going to address that one because I'll only get an answer that isn't true.  I am not going to remind him to call his PO.  Strangely enough I always find myself wanting and willing to enable him when he's doing "better" because I like what I see and want it to continue.
Update:  I need to talk to him again (after having found the pot pipe) because I found another vial.  This one is very tiny glass container with a screw on cap. Residue of a few tiny off-white "crumbs" - in which some are stuck to the side. A little sticky on the outside.  He will give me some story - but I need to let him know that he cannot bring anything of this sort into the house.  Consequences when I find it again?  Heck - I don't know. Complicated because he's doing better in school and behavior.....

I couldn\'t venture a guess as to the drugs in those vials. The stories are, of course, just stories, and I used to get so furious with my son knowing he\'s thinking he\'s putting one over on me.
But his story-telling is done mainly to protect his ability to use. Pure and simple. Partly to play the game of \" fooling the parents\", too. Bit more to keep scrutiny off him and to cover his own butt. More in Msg.
