Rehab

It was a big day a year ago today. After 100 days split between the Cardiac Surgery ICU and the Respiratory Acute Care Unit at Mass General Dina was on the move. She moved to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital for the first time. It was a long time coming but in a way it seemed to happen very quickly that day. They had been talking about it for the previous few days but weren’t sure exactly when it would happen. They told us late in the morning that day that they were just waiting for a bed to open up. It could have been a matter of hours or a matter of days. Within a few hours they were there to transport her. While it was a huge step forward it was also scary. We had come to trust and rely on the staff in both units tremendously so it was hard leaving that comfort zone and saying goodbye to those we became close with, but we knew it was the right move. And my cousin worked at the rehab hospital and was in a position high enough to be able to pull strings if/when necessary so that helped ease some of the fear. In the end it only lasted a few days because she developed pneumonia and an infection and had to go back to Mass General for a few weeks but it was still a huge step in the right direction at the time.
