Random Reflections

As age is catching up fast, the other day I was thinking:

When my children are away and busy in their lives and I have all the free time?
When I want to connect with my children and they have no time?
When I am leading a retired life and have plenty of time but no company?

The thought came that within my means I tried to do my best to teach them patiently, inculcate values in life, comradeship but still they do not have time to communicate. Nevertheless, life goes on for everyone. The children are so busy that they do not miss me. However, I thought that if I can find means of passing my time fruitfully then this pain shall not hurt so much.
Being a working doctor and seeing this dilemma of many a sick senior citizens, I started a center for medically challenged seniors which is one of its kind in India. In most cases the children are paying for their upkeep but sometimes the yearning in the seniors’ eyes to see or speak to the children breaks my heart.
Why is it that they do not have time to speak to them even once a week! Are the seniors demanding too much? The children, on their part, have fulfilled their duty by paying the bills but it is like making their parents eat a sumptuous meal without love and affection
I have had seniors who are paying for themselves as their children have refused to fund them. One of them went to the extent of saying that my father must have given money to look after his parents but today’s generation does not believe in giving money to their parents. It is the children’s right to be brought up by parents and in return parents should not expect anything back.
This is an eye-opener for the young and active who are soon going to be seniors of tomorrow. They have dutifully fulfilled their duty of being children to their parents and parents to their children. The word “Sandwich Generation” for today’s senior is a very apt term as they are demanded both by their parents and their children.
Dear SENIORS, the message is on the wall. Bring up your children very well but do not expect anything in return. Be financially very sound and invest in a way that you do not need financial help from them in your sunset years.
Develop your own company. Try to interact with the younger generation in your neighbourhood so that you do not miss your own loved ones who are far away. Engage yourself in hobbies and good activities. Make good friends, keep good company. Do things which you always wanted to but could not in your younger days.
Keep your head up and always smile. Spread positivity everywhere. It will make you happy.
