When modelling survival we considered not only combinations of the parameters of interest (��habitat, breeding success, sex and age), but also an additional constraint applied to the habitat and breeding success estimates via a manipulation of the PIMs. For this we set the PIM structure so that separate survival estimates would be generated for the two habitat types when breeding was successful, but only a single estimate would be generated when breeding failed regardless of habitat type (a form of habitat and breeding success interaction). In addition, territories were regularly monitored during the remainder of the breeding season and in the post-breeding season.
