Q &As Regarding the SARS-CoV-2

On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that the rapidly spreading outbreak of the novel coronavirus constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

What is the novel coronavirus?

SARS-CoV-2 was found due to the outbreak of viral pneumonia cases COVID-19 in Wuhan in 2019, which later got named by the International Community on Taxonomy of Viruses, ICTV on February 11, 2020. Coronavirus is a large group of virus family, which is known to cause cold, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and other serious diseases. The new coronavirus is a new strain which has never been detected in human body before.

What are the causes and routes of transmission?

The disease is caused by viral infection, through:

  • inhalation of droplets emitted by an infected person when coughing or sneezing

  • touching contaminated items, and then touch mouth, nose or eyes

  • the touch with animals carrying the virus or eating uncooked or undercooked meat or animal products containing the virus

What are the symptoms of new coronavirus infection?

Symptoms vary according to different degrees of infection. Patients may have fever, cough, pneumonia, and some with more serious or even death.

The lethality of the virus is about 2% to 4%, which is preliminary data that may change as more information is available.

How to prevent from infection?

At present, there is no effective medicine or vaccine to prevent the infection of NCoV-2019. But people in China, or even worldwide can take measures to cut down the odds of getting infected.

  • Don't travel to China at present.

If live in or have to travel to areas at high risk of NCoV-2019, take precautions to avoid infection by:

  • Stay away from patients.

  • Keep away from places where animals may carry the virus, including fairs where animals and animal products are sold. Please note that both living and dead animals may carry the virus.

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use alcohol based hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable.

  • Avoid touching mouth, face, eyes or nose

  • Wear a mask when contacting patients or suspected patients

What can pharmaceutical companies do?

“Several kinds of drugs are in the stage of clinical tests,” according to the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China. Among which, Chloroquine Phosphate has certain therapeutic effect. Currently, it’s the duty of global pharmaceutical manufacturers to explore & develop an effective medicine or vaccine to control the CoV that is rampaging in China. Many life-science companies are providing relative techniques or solutions targeting the clinical stage experiments, among which Creative Biolabs is enjoying great popularity among the customers by providing one-stop services covering the entire pipeline of antibody engineering & development and preclinical and clinical technical support. The manufacturability assessment and optimization solutions can make progress with pharmaceutical companies’ tests on the new drugs that target the NCoV-2019, including Virtual Prediction of Manufacturability Assessment and Improvement, Experimental Manufacturability Assessment and Optimization, which are available in package or individually, to enhance the safety, quality and manufacturability of drug candidates, and  thereby accelerate further registration procedures.

The Director-General of the WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, met President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing, who discussed with the latest information on the 2019-nCoV outbreak and reiterated their commitment to bring it under control.
