My friend V---- is scaring me. I call him my friend, but we really don't know each other very well. He showed up out of the blue and seemed really intent on becoming friends. I loaned him money because he was in financial straits. Big mistake. I still haven't received repayment and it's been over two months. Still, he's been calling, texting, and emailing me more than I'm comfortable with--I feel smothered. I also feel bad because he's just come out, and I know how scary that can be. I want to be there for him, to show him around the sometimes daunting gay world, but his obsessive, clingy behavior is making it difficult. He told me he came out to his mom and told her about me. Hello, we're only friends! He told me he thinks we should move in together. I don't think so. He's dropped in to my office unannounced two or three times. He got mad at me because I didn't come over to see his place once. He got mad because I told my coworker about him being gay, and now he thinks everyone knows. I guess the only good thing is that now maybe he will stay away. The hard part of all this is that he's very handsome--if he were normal, I wouldn't mind getting to know him better. But his behavior is raising all sorts of red flags--give him an inch and he'll take a mile sort of thing. Why is it so hard to find a nice, decent person whom I'm attracted to?
