Possible new Acromegaly club member
Well where do I start? I am about to complete my membership to this exclusive Acrogmegaly club and nothing personal against all the current membership, it isn't a club I would willingly have joined. In hindsight my journey started a few years back.
I commented on a visit to my GP that I seemed to have a lot of fluid in my hands and feet and rings and shoes were tight. She said there was no excess fluid and letft it at that. Clue missed.
I have had high blood pressure for a few years now. Clue missed.
I went to my GP with what I thought were swollen glands in front of my right ear. Referred straightaway to an ENT consultant who later removed my parotid gland. During the investigations there were a couple of comments made. First when they viewed my throat (inside) the doctor commented on a swelling in my throat. Said he would refer me for speech therapy! Clue missed. Then a comment was made that I had a bulky tongue. Clue missed. When I had my CT scan for the parotid gland it was noticed that I had calcifications in my thyroid area. This was eventually diagnosed as a goiter. Clue missed.
However at the New year I had an appointment with my Endo and she had just finished telling me that she was discharging me when she noticed my hands. Just one more blood test for growth hormone she said. Probably nothing she said. So here I am now having had my glucose test and my MRI within the space of a week. I am now waiting for bed for further investigations. It was booked for Monday 10th March but unfortunately they keep having busy weekends in A & E and my booking keeps getting postponed while they fill my bed with other more needy cases.
I live in Northern Ireland and have never heard of this condition before. Given the population of this place I don't think there are too many people here to connect with so feeling a bit isolated. I have read as many of the posts on this website that I can but still getting very teary everytime the word Acromegaly goes through my brain. Its in my thoughts first thing in the morning and last thing at night and many times in between. The only thing getting me through the day is the fact that I work full time and I get distracted by that. Sorry for the pity party but this is all still a bit raw for me.
