Please Stand Up
I copied this ugly joke here so you'd know what I'm talking about. Some may think its funny. I do not. I think its so sad I could almost cry.
This morning I went to sign my Dogs up for welfare. At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare". So I explained to her that my Dogs are mixed in color, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and have no frigging clue who their Daddies are. They expect me to feed them, provide them with housing and medical care, and feel guilty because they are dogs.So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify. My Dogs get their first checks Friday.Damn, this is a great country.
I guess I'm an ungrateful so and so. A person on Daily Strength has been sending me jokes... and I've enjoyed many a laugh from them... but sad to say, today, I've asked him not to write to me any more. I copied my note to him below...
I want my friends to know I do not support the ugly things that people have been saying about Obama. I voted for him. Ugly politics may take him out of office before he gets to pull things around but I believe he has been working very hard to do so. I think he's done as well as anyone could have considering the mess he walked into, and that given more time he could truly make some changes. That's just me. I don't want to force what I believe down anyone's throat... but I don't want to stand by quietly any more while people talk ugly about President Obama or spread ugly demeaning things about groups of people. This morning's joke was clearly an attack on people of color, Mexican, and other minorities made me both sad and mad. I hope everyone will stand up and say this is not funny and its not okay. I wish you all well.
I don't mean to sound ugly but I have to speak up. You I believe were in the service and fought to give me the right to be who I am... So here's who I am. I'm a democrat... a bleeding heart... I care about others... I'm not particularly liberal... I voted for Obama. I think he's working hard to turn things around and that many people are using him for a whipping post for everything... a lot of it well on its way long before he became president... Bottom line... your racist jokes... and your jokes about Obama... they offend me. Its a shame... I like a good laugh... but I'd rather not hear from you any more. Thank You Elissa Smith

Everyone has their own way of viewing things; jokes, politics, religions, life. I\'m trying hard to learn how to respond when what someone says or does offends/bothers me. I think letting this person know you are offended was the right thing to do. I have some friends who have sent offensive jokes to me and I\'ve asked them not to send such jokes. They honored my request and now send \"safe\" jokes. Honesty is the best policy. We don\'t all have to agree or like the same things. But we do have to respect others. I must admit, I chuckled when I read this joke. I can only hope I am not judged wholly on whether or not I laugh at any one joke, but rather on the whole character of my person. I didn\'t vote for President Obama, but he is my president and deserving of my respect. I can\'t imagine the mess I\'d create if I were president!! I think you did the right thing, being honest..I love jokes, I laugh, I try not to take them personally, but enough is enough..... I like dirty jokes, lol.haha..Not jokes that down grade people....The mess we are in, I don\'t think any president could change things in 4 year... Thanks so much for taking this stand Elissa. I am continually appalled at the unwarranted attacks on President Obama. He is a bright man with a lot of good ideas who is working to fix the disastrous mess left behind by our former president.
The hatred flying around this country is counterproductive and wrong. Rather than spewing hatred we need to pull together to make things work right, no matter what our political, religious, economic or any other point of view is. It\'s time for our people in Congress to vote with their hearts and not with their party. Otherwise nothing good or meaningful will ever get accomplished.
Hatred is not a policy and will never solve anything.

Thank You for your words of encouragement. Part of me wanted to hide my head... but I\'m glad I said what I felt. I have a varigated family and I\'m so grateful for them all... red and yellow black and white... they are definitely all very precious in His sight and mine also. I love them so much. I received the same joke in my e-mails and I remember thinking that was not funny. I do not judge people based ona few mistakes they make and sometimes I know I forward e-mails that are not funny to me but someone else may get a kick out of it. The way I look at it is that there is always a delete button and I can use it at my discretion. Hugs, Inga
